New clouds for air battles
Attention! Outdated news format. Content may not display correctly.
In War Thunder update 1.89 “"Imperial Navy” we are improving the clouds in aircraft battles at high graphical settings.
Hello everyone!
We are getting ready for War Thunder update 1.89 “Imperial Navy” - it will be introduced very soon. Today we want to show you how clouds will change in aircraft or helicopter battles at the graphical settings “Movie” and “Max”. Technically, our developers have been able to increase the integration steps for clouds rendering by 4 times whilst avoiding visible FPS changes.
New clouds for air battles will appear in the game with update 1.89 “Imperial Navy”. To see the new clouds, you have to switch graphical settings to “Movie” or “Maximum”, or have SSAO enabled to maximum.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white, The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night, And I think to myself what a wonderful world;
Sadly the skies are filled with hostiles though :(
Suddenly, German fighters!
this was surprisingly highly asked for, nice work on listening to peoples feedback!
WilberBean, DDD, youre wrong, you dont know how many times i seen people whine about the clouds!
Actually people asked for bug fixes in aircraft on ULQ (they work correctly in tanks, but not in aircraft), not high/movie settings...
This is actually really good to see Gaijin. Please continue making smaller quality of life changes like this to Air RB and make it great again.
After 7 years some graphical improvements would be nice
We had an engine update in October 2015 and February 2018 :3 (Global illumination, TAA, texture streaming...). Our devs keep working on the engine, but it's a lot of work!
Ouiche, Dont worry... your game looks great.... i run it with movie setting and it is awsome
Looks very nice, I have to say
Looks very flat. Like not all the clouds are this flat. Also its just the same thing but more blurry. Improvement I guess.
Nomadic_Warrior, Have to agree, the older version looks realistic, it has choppy, shows cloud stepping, and seems more like it should be with puffy and whispy, but then, I dont play "movie" I dont even watch it on DVD :P
Finally, I see that the devs are willing to listen to the community and change major things. Also since the japanese heavy fighter was added, when can we expect the F8 and it's adversaries.
OMG, this is literally the best Devblog ever!!!
and this is you best comments
1. Is it going to fix the weird spotting distances clouds have? 2. Are you going to model cloud altitudes and formations realistically? 3. This isn't a question, just a statement, it looks like you change the PNG from a 512 texture to a 1024 texture, doesn't look that much better.
They look wonderful. Will these new clouds fix the visible grey dots for aircraft through clouds issue?
Real question though is will people stuck on ULQ finally be able to see planes silhouetted against the clouds (not in the clouds). As soon as clouds become the background to a plane it disappears. Been an issue since the inception of the game.
I would imagine (and hope!) that giving ULQ players an even greater advantage over non-ULQ players in regards to spotting mechanics, is rather low on their priority list.
Xtanol, Right now ULQ players have absolutely no advantage of any kind in air battles, unless someone without ULQ has PostFX badly configured and gets "atomic sun" issues. Fixing rendering on a cloud background would at least make ULQ players close to being similarly capable as others in day air battles. Also, aircraft currently render properly on cloud backgrounds on ULQ if you're in a tank, so no additional change is needed that would affect the tankers (who may have some advantage from ULQ right now)
