The upcoming War Thunder update brings with it a special treat for all pilots and fans of the P-47 Thunderbolt series of aircraft in particular. Namely, as part of the next major update “Raining Fire” coming to War Thunder, we plan on adding a couple of new highly anticipated versions of the legendary Thunderbolt!
The next major update to War Thunder will bring with it an abundance of new vehicles, features and more. However, at the same time, we haven’t forgotten about some of the veterans in the game and we’re happy to present to our pilots two new versions of one of the oldest machines in War Thunder - the American P-47 Thunderbolt - coming to the game with the release of the incoming major update!
The next major War Thunder update introduces two new versions of the popular P-47 Thunderbolt - the P-47D-22 RE for US pilots, and the Thunderbolt Mk.I for our RAF pilots. Being earlier models of the Thunderbolt, these two versions distinguish themselves from the familiar later models with their signature ‘Razorback’ design - the original design of the P-47 prior to the introduction of the bubble canopy with the D-25 variant. Propheads and fans of American aviation have been adamantly requesting the addition of these well-known earlier Thunderbolt models for some time and we’re happy to finally give them a chance to pilot these machines starting from War Thunder: Raining Fire update. There’s more to come!
British pilots won’t be missing out on the fun either, as their favorite aviation tree will see their mid ranks reinforced with the additions of the Thunderbolt Mk.I. This represents some of the final production variants of the Razorback Thunderbolts, incorporating all the improvements of the previous variants in addition to possessing a higher payload capacity, similar to the familiar later Thunderbolt modifications.
The much anticipated early models of the P-47 Thunderbolt will be making their way to War Thunder with the upcoming update and we highly encourage all pilots to give the new warbirds some flight time. In the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to the news for more information regarding the next major update “Raining Fire” coming to the game very soon. Until then, clear skies pilots!

Thank you for this long-awaited addition! Hopefully the B-26 Marauder will also be included one day.
Yes! Hoping for at least 2 versions one with gun pods and one without. They would sit nicely between the B-25 and the B-17
It already has been. It was an event vehicle about 3ish years ago?
Alexsis8, Nah. That was the A-26C Invader. The B-26 hasn't appeared in the game in any form yet.
Historically the premium P-47 in German tech tree is Razorback version. So it is inaccurate in game. Will you replace it with razorback version? It would be really good so please replace it with the Razorback version.
From what I've heard, the Germans actually captured a different variant of Razorback than the variant we will be getting this patch
Sean0_0, The one pictured in game is T9+LK, or 42-75971. It's a D-16-RE but still a D-22 would be a better match that the D-25.
Thanks for informing Sean0_0 and Ramor69. I did not know this. So I made some research and from what I learned there are several changes between D-12 and D-22 versions. Engine upgraded to R-2800-59, modified underwing pylons, changes to water injection system and also Farmingdale factory switched to Hamilton Standard paddle-bladed propeller.
very nice to see these P47s finally being added to the game ^^
It would also be really great to see the North American Bronco added to the game too.
All answers (2)Cyannide, IT WOULD BE EVEN NICER IF YOU STOPPED WHINING ABOUT THAT USELESS AIRCRAFT.
Now this was a long awaited addition! Hopefully we can see more of this sort in the future (ahem B-26).
What will the fate of the US prem P-47D-23 in the files be?
my best guess is that it will be a reward during the USAF birthday event coming up on September 18th
All answers (1)CleverNameGotBan, probably be a specific US ace or unit something along those lines.
