The Karo-Tei Type 2 is a sub-chaser boat used by the Japanese in the later stages of WW2 to combat submarine threats in the waters of Okinawa and the Philippines. In update 1.89 “Imperial Navy”, the Karo-Tei Type 2 will be one of the first vessels unlocked by future IJN captains in War Thunder!
Briefly: A late-war Japanese sub-chaser boat, introduced as one of the first vessels for future Japanese captains in the game.
The Karo-Tei Type 2 sub-chaser was developed in the later stages of WW2 and commissioned into service in 1944. The vessel’s primary task was to protect the Japanese naval bases at Okinawa and the Philippines from light allied assaults and submarines in particular. The vessel only saw limited use due to the ever worsening war situation for Japan at the time.
Karo-Tei Type 2, sub-chaser, Japan, rank I.
pros:
- Small profile
- Cannon armament
- Quickly researchable AP 37-mm shells
cons:
- Modest crew count
- Average mobility
The vessel doesn’t necessarily excel in any aspect, but instead, offers a good balance between firepower, survivability and protection, making it a suitable vehicle for getting acquainted with early Japanese naval designs.
As such, aspiring captains of this vessel can expect to command a sub-chaser boat, armed with a single 37mm Type 94 as well as a 20mm Type 98 cannon, which form its primary armament. Additionally, 10 depth charges may be mounted on the ship’s aft to be used as a defensive measure to shake off potential pursuers. All this firepower, including the 13 crew members on board, are powered by two pairs of engines, which in turn allow the Karo-Tei Type 2 to reach a top speed of 25.9 knots (48 km/h) at full speed ahead.
Now we just need to wait for update 1.89 “Imperial Navy” to try this boat out. Smooth waters commanders!
The War Thunder Team

Deutschland-class and Prinz Eugen files were found already some time ago, will they be part of the patch? ik this sounds a litttle bit over the top considdereing that this Update is focused on the IJN, and yes this sounds like wehrb. talk, ik that, but is this possible or will only Japan recieve eavy cruisers this update, like the dev server 1 hinted?
Agreed. It would be nonsense if only the Japanese recieved a heavy cruiser.... :c
Any counter to the t2/mig-19s for the allies to fix the matchmaching in top tier air rb? Thanks
they are adding the Hunter Mk.6 and the F86K for France, which is hilarious, considering that they got around 60 of them from ITALY, produced in license by FIAT ITSELF..., or neither germany that operated 200-ish of them or the US which had the similar F-86D, but gaijin, as always, will say ")))". Apart from that, nothing else. So for another patch we will see top tier jets divided into "Axis vs Axis" or "Allied vs Allied" for another patch... gg gaijin
All answers (1)LevXVII, The D literally didnt have guns and only had rockets. Be quiet.
Hahahaha what about the F-100D, F-86K, G-91Y etc
All answers (2)War_Gaming_NL, None of those have any chance against a T-2
Will we see a counter to the stupidly OP T-2K and MiG-19S this patch?
If you mean new SAMs then yes, if you mean jets then yes: the Hunter F6 and the not really that good of a counter (i guess) the F-86K.
All answers (2)War_Gaming_NL, So no?
The T-2 is not overpowered. It climbs worse than the MiG-19 and is the worst turning jet fighter in the game right now so sometimes it's hard to get guns on target. Not just that, but when it tries to turn, it loses a lot of speed in return because of that high AoA. It's not stupidly OP. You need to play it to figure out the thing.
EpicBlitzkrieg87, The t2 is overpowered if you play with a bit of brain. And yes, the mig19s are a quite good counter to the t2, the problem is that they are on the axis teams too. I would love to see again allies vs axis games as balanced when there only was f86f2,hunters,(no f9f xd) vs mig15, mig17 and g91, for example
IJN naval tree looks great so far! Can't wait to try out all the machines! I hope that in some future, we will see Kitakami and scout planes in action! Also submarines would be awesome.
Since when does a quickly researched modificatuon became a pro?
Since you need to have more pros than cons. To me it sounds like a slow boat with meh armament (knowing Japanese weapons, and having to show broadside to bring both of them on target at same time). If something is chasing this, it'll kill before it gets so close that the depth charges are useful, and it can't chase other boats. Also, it being a late war boat as one of the first available in tech tree just goes to show the quality of choices available for Japanese boats in general.
Where in the entire devblog does it say anything about researched modifications? xD
All answers (1)War_Gaming_NL, pros: Quickly researchable AP 37-mm shells
any news on any ww2 tank? :(
The game is dominated by WW2 vehicles and they're focusing on more modern stuff because tier 6 and tier 7 need fleshing out... so far only modern vehicles are bringing new mechanics and gameplay. A new ww2 plane or tank would be nice, yes, but only for a few hours or days because of the repetitive and old gameplay.
I didn't see any WW2 tanks in the first dev server. So... I wouldn't count on it too much to be honest And they didn't add ww2 tanks for ages (unless we count the addition of italian tanks, but, apart from that, they just added more and more advanced tanks/MBT's). I think they now care only for the income, which, as we know, comes from difficult stuff to research (or if it takes too long to do).
Can not wait to try out this small boat~
