Despite entering service late in the war, the Italian MC.205 “Veltro” found itself clashing in fierce combat with the most advanced allied aircraft over the skies of Italy - and holding it’s own. Meet one of the finest Italian fighter aircraft of the Second World War in War Thunder’s Update 1.69!
By 1941, the well-established MC.202 “Folgore” fighter had started to show the first signs of its aging design compared to the much newer, more advanced, allied counterparts. Almost immediately, Italian engineers took up the task to find ways of improving the existing Folgore airframes in order to create a new stop-gap fighter before better designs could be created. The result of this undertaking was the phenomenal MC.205 “Veltro”.
The Veltro (eng; Greyhound) was the natural evolution of the MC.202 Folgore. The aircraft was designed in a time when Italy was facing an increase in allied bombings and struggling to maintain aerial superiority. The improved design allowed for combat at high altitude and vastly improved the lacking firepower of the previous model.
The new single-engined, all-metal, monoplane fighter was visually very similar to its predecessor, also adopting many of its features and merits, such as durability and agility. However, underneath the surface, it received an Italian version of the Daimler-Benz DB605 engine, which had already proven itself with later modifications of the well-known Bf-109. Furthermore, the firepower on later models was also improved; the wing-mounted low caliber machine guns were replaced by 20mm MG 151/20 cannons.
Due to a late introduction into the conflict, only around 260 MC.205 Veltros were built and nearly all were confined to the Mediterranean theatre where they were tasked with protecting strategic locations such as the islands of Sicily and Sardinia and later on, Rome itself. Nonetheless, unlike it’s predecessor and thanks to the various changes, it proved very successful at fending off allied bombing raids as well as presenting itself as a worthy adversary to the P-51D Mustang, something deemed impossible with the Folgore.
In War Thunder, the Veltro will receive a chance to prove itself over again. Unsurprisingly, the Veltro’s performance will be similar to that of the MC.202, which many players have already gotten a feel for.
Taking down opponents with the MC.205 is no longer going to be a challenge, as its wing-mounted 20mm cannons, aided by a decent ammunition compliment, will make even the toughest of opponents think twice before engaging you.
Be careful though! As the Veltros performance increased, so did its weight. The aircraft will have problems competing in prolonged turning engagements as well as catching up to fast opponents.
The Veltro, similarly to his German cousin - the Bf 109, excels at surprise attacks from above, the so called Boom and Zoom tactic. By using the excellent flight characteristics and firepower, pouncing on unaware opponents from altitude will result in their sudden and quick demise.
In War Thunder Update 1.69, the aircraft will be available in two variants:
- MC.205V Serie 1 - Early production version armed with machine guns
- MC.205V Serie 3 - Later production version with improved firepower

In short, the MC.205 Veltro will form the backbone of the newly formed Italian research tree and will provide its pilots with a solid dogfighter, capable of confidently combating any foe in battle. Be the first to try out the new aircraft in War Thunder’s Update 1.69! See you there!

Gaijin can you try to find better aa tanks for Russian tier 1 and 2 because literally I flip over then I get one shoted from a plane and then I get killed easily. can you give a discount for gold because I want to buy some but CAD money cost more than USD. :(
Well, maybe there are no better sowjet low-tier AAs
Any estimate of the Soon™ness of the update?
Soon™
When are we getting Löwe tanks? every new update is a US/Soviet/Brit biased op tank
Löwe didnt existed and the 10,5 Cm Tiger II has a better Armor AND a better Canon, because the 15cm gun would be a low-velocity gun. Löwe would be totaly usless.
When is 1.69 coming out
Soon™

Dev server ITT - https://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/364509-screenshots-dev-server-169-italian-tech-tree/
thanks much for the tech tree info... just can't figure out why the 109 is a higher spot on the tech tree than the g56 - g56 had higher speed, higher rate of climb, lower turn time, and better guns with more ammo
Does Italy have a turnfighter that can rival spitfires? Mc 202 maybe?
Re.2001 for sure. It was built specifically to perform aerobatics.
Gaijin, you must be working your butts of at the moment! Your adding so many Italian at the moment!
Gaijin has been putting their heart and soul into making these wonderful flying machines!
thanks gaijin <3
Looking excellent. Are you going to do a separate devblog on the Macchi C.205N2 Orione?
Have you guys at Gaijin ever considered adding in some more tier I British vehicles such as the Vickers Medium Tank, the Daimler Armoured Car (40mm 2pdr cannot and 7.7mm BESA machine gun) and the Lachester Armoured Car (2 7.7mm machine guns and 1 12.7mm machine gun)? Hey, if the Germans get some more armoured cars then we British need some true fighting machines!
Considering the brits got the first armored cars in the game a while ago the rest of them need some love first.
