At the Igromir 2016 expo held this autumn in Moscow, we spoke about our work on the Japanese armored vehicle tech tree. We also showcased two tanks from it. Our work on the Japanese tanks is approaching the finish line, and these new armored vehicles will be coming to War Thunder very soon. We’re going to acquaint you with them in our Devblog.
Today we’d like to talk about the Japanese Type 2 Ka-Mi tank, the most mass-produced Japanese amphibious tank in the history of World War II. Mitsubishi engineers created this light tank on the orders of the navy – Japanese military sailors needed a tank capable of landing near the shore and independently reaching the coast, maintaining its seaworthiness even in rough waters. Considering their truly massive plans for military operations on islands and in coastal territories, it’s no wonder that the Imperial Navy gave the Mitsubishi’s engineers carte blanche to come up with engineering solutions: “do as you like, but the tank must be able to travel on water like a boat!”
As a basis for the future design, the tank designers used the light Ha-Go tank, which were cranked out at a great rate. In the course of development, it became clear that the required maneuverability and stability at sea could only be obtained by installing pontoon floats capable of supporting a light tank on water. These pontoons made the tank look like a boat and really did give the amphibious vehicle impressive seaworthiness. It turned out that effectively moving and doing battle with these pontoons was impossible, so they were removable: the tank reached the coast, quickly dropped its pontoons and went into battle without them. All credit where credit is due – this very unusual decision turned out to be fully justified, and over the course of war, Japan built roughly 180 of these vehicles and used them very effectively in naval landings.

In War Thunder, the Type 2 Ka-Mi has been recreated in its ground warfare form – like the American Sheridan, tank cannot swim. The Ka-Mi is a light tank in the lower ranks of the Japanese armored vehicle tech tree. It is armed with a Type 1 37mm cannon with an ammunition complement of 132 shells, along with a couple of 7.7 mm machine guns – one twinned with the cannon and the other mounted at the front. The tank’s armor is characteristic of the light Japanese tanks from the early war period and is 6-12 mm in thickness. The Type 2 Ka-Mi has a crew of four. The tactics of playing this tank are similar to those of other light tanks – the vehicle is quite mobile and its cannon has a very good rate of fire. The Type 2 Ka-Mi’s commander must keep in mind the tank’s thin armor and carefully calculate their ammunition complement before a battle – the ammo rack is located dangerously close to the crew, and the tank’s armor can’t stop an enemy anti-tank round.
Japanese tanks are very unusual and add a range of exciting moments to our favorite game. Keep an eye on our Devblog and be the first to find out the news about the Japanese armored vehicle tech tree!

I am looking forward to these already!!!! Thanks Gaijin! :))
It's so lovely !!! I'd dream to adopt it as a pet !
Looks like a Tiger P and a T26 had a child xD lol
''Our work on the Japanese tanks is approaching the finish line, and these new armored vehicles will be coming to War Thunder very soon. We’re going to acquaint you with them in our Devblog.'' I can't wait for Japanese tanks!!!!!!!!!! I'm so hyped!
When it goes in water will the floats appear on it or will something magical happen?
I find ridiculous to include amphibious tanks that cannot swim in the game. Better keep em out until you make em swim...
We HAVE floating ground vehicles, but this particular one was not made as standard amphibious. After deploy via water, pontoons was drop and only after that crew was able to use it in battle.
Stona_WT, I hope we'll get the version with pontoons (even if it was premium, just make it available for gold, not just in a Bundle). IMHO detachable pontoons could be an interesting mechanic to be implemented in WT and there are more vehicles using it: * German: Schwimmpanzer II and Schwimmpanzer 38t * Japanese: Type 2 Ka-Mi, Type 3 Ka-Chi and Type 5 To-Ku * British: Covenanter and Vickers Light Tank Mk VI * Russian: T-54 * USA: M4 and M26 PS: I can provide pic. links if anyone is interested ;)
Less metal-music and more engine noise in your videos, please. I know metal is popular in Russia, but not everyone loves it. And even those who do (including me) don't want it covering up the engine noise of the tanks in the previews... We're not previewing the latest metal music, we're previewing the tank.
+1
FrizFreleng, I agree. I watch a lot of youtube videos on WT stuff and most of them have some sort of music in the background that is mostly just annoying. I want to hear the engines, guns and the commentator giving facts and options, not metal or elevator music. Just saying.
Recently devs revealed they are working on the Soviet T-55. My question to mods/admins: any idea/news/intel/whatever how far the development is? Release with next patch or later? Would be nice to know more than just that one sentence "we are working on T-55" lol
Is the T55 really needed? AFAIK all it adds is NBC stuff which is not in the game. And we are already in the 1950s with the T54. Seems a bit redundant IMHO.
Somehow I had a feeling that if I refresh the War Thunder page, there will be some great news! It would be awesome if there was version with pontoons that could be released on command but it probably took them more than a minute to transform the tank into a ground mode so i understand why they are not in. I can't wait for more news! Great work!!! :D
Haha sweet! I'm actually using a few of these in a winSPWW2 PBEM battle right now :) You know, I totally appreciate the time and effort to model these Japanese tanks and to make them available because let's face it, they were barely adequate in tank to tank combat. I do hope they get their own unique sets of sounds.
