Today we’re taking a look at Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya, coming in as the final and most modern Sevastopol-class battleship. Using the Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya in Battle

The Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya retains all of the key advantages of her sistership, Sevastopol: solid survivability thanks to a long, high armor belt, and a powerful 305 mm main battery. Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya features enhanced anti-aircraft defenses, boasting an increased number of AA guns and the addition of a radar. Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya is a well-balanced ship suited for medium and long-range combat, offering decent protection, an excellent broadside salvo, and good anti-air defenses.

Feature Spotlight: Air Defense

Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya arrives in the game in her 1946 modernization configuration, reflecting the combat experience that highlighted the critical importance of onboard anti-air defenses. Even when compared to Sevastopol, which was already well-protected against air attacks, this ship is impressive. The number of guns increased, and their arrangement now more closely resembles the anti-aircraft layout of the Marat. 76 mm anti-aircraft mounts were placed on main battery turrets one and four, while three twin 76 mm gun mounts were positioned at the bow and stern, replacing a single pair of aft anti-torpedo guns. 37 mm automatic guns were installed on turrets two and three, as well as on the superstructures. Most importantly, Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya is equipped with a radar that provides early warning of aerial threats.

Developer comment: Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya is a landmark ship in the history of the Russian Navy and a real hero and guardian of the Baltic Sea. As the fourth and final vessel of the Sevastopol class, we were naturally eager to add it to War Thunder. Since all of the Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya’s sister ships are already in the game (featuring both early configurations and combat-ready modernizations from the start of the war), there is no need to include this ship in the main research tree. However, it makes for an excellent reward for an event! The ship is slightly faster than the Paris Commune, but it’s slightly inferior in terms of survivability and lacks a pair of stern auxiliary guns. That said, the new ship’s anti-air capabilities are better than Marat’s, and it’s the first in the class to feature a radar. The result is a well-balanced ship with a focus on anti-air defense; it will be particularly effective against high rank cruisers, but it can comfortably hold its own against battleships as well. Protect the vulnerable superstructure and choose the right shell type for each target. Good luck in the event!

Battleship Gangut was laid down on June 3rd 1909, at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg. On June 27th 1925, the ship was renamed Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya (October Revolution). It underwent a major modernization between 1931 and 1934. During the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939–1940, the battleship shelled Finnish coastal batteries and provided support to ground forces. Following the outbreak of the the Second World War, Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya participated in the defense of Leningrad (now called Saint Petersburg). In September 1941, it engaged in heavy shelling of German troops. On September 21st the ship was struck by three aerial bombs in the bow section but remained under power and proceeded to Kronstadt. Throughout September, the battleship’s anti-aircraft gunners shot down 11 aircraft.

In October, the ship moved to Leningrad and docked at the Baltic Shipyard for repairs. In the spring of 1942, the crew repaired a shell hole using their own resources. In July 1944, the battleship conducted its final combat firing missions on the Karelian Isthmus. On July 22nd 1944, it was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.

On February 17th 1956, the ship was stricken from the Navy list and subsequently scrapped between 1956 and 1957. The battleship’s anchors and anti-aircraft guns are displayed as a monument on Anchor Square in St. Petersburg.
