The Westland Wyvern was the first series-produced combat aircraft in the world equipped with a turboprop engine. It will also be the first of its kind in War Thunder, as a Premium vehicle. Meet the new addition to the game, one of the most extraordinary carrier-borne aircraft in history!
The Westland Wyvern was actively developed after the end of the Second World War. The immediately noticeable distinctive features of this aircraft are its unusual appearance and two contra-rotating propellers. But that’s far from everything that makes it stand out from its contemporaries. The aircraft is equipped with a turboprop engine, which provides an impressive weight-lifting ability. Finally, it is armed with four 20mm cannons which automatically make it a dangerous opponent to any opponent unlucky enough to become its target.
Due to the originality and unusualness of its design, development of the aircraft dragged on for a long time. The first prototype took to the skies in 1946, but series production of the Wyvern didn’t start until 1953! Late for the Korean War, the carrier-borne plane managed to take part in battles of the Suez Crisis. Nonetheless, the combat history of this aircraft does not stand out as one of variety and depth.
That said, in War Thunder the Wyvern has every chance to prove itself all over again. The chief advantage of this turboprop aircraft is its flexibility. Apart from its fantastic frontal cannons, the aircraft can also be armed with torpedoes, bombs or impressive rockets. With a complement of 16 rockets, the Wyvern will be a deciding force in mixed battles in War Thunder.
Naturally, even the most unusual vehicles in the game have their weaknesses. Paradoxically enough, for the Westland Wyvern it is speed. The aircraft has trouble flying faster than 380 mph (611 km/h), and can only manage that only at low altitudes. A peculiarity of the Python engine is that at higher altitudes, its power drops catastrophically. Apart from that, it has no defensive weaponry, so it is recommended to avoid letting anyone get on your six.

How will the Westland Wyvern perform in battle? We'll find out very soon.
In the meantime, keep an eye on our news and look forward to this aircraft!

YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMY BETTER THAN SEX MMMMMMMMM
I don't know about that Ausie_Raptor, sex is pretty great. I don't think this flying barrel beats sex lol.
My Question is: What is it's purpose in game? If it is a Turboprop it should at least be faster than prop-driven plane right? Wrong, this plane is notoriously slow for a turboprop. It carries more than a Prop-driven plane right? Nope. Only about 1000kg of Bombs or torpedos. It does have more 'plane' to carry around though: at 11,136kg it sure ain't a light plane. So basically its a worse performing Firefly or Firebrand that is also carrier launched. Cool plane but utility is ZERO.
The rocket count on the Firefly is 16 on the later model with more ammo for its 4 hispanos and the Firebrand also has Rockets, Bombs and Torpedos (although not its full load in-game) as well as 4 hispanos. As well the firebrand is faster at 662Kmh (614kmh fully loaded) Plus the firebrand has Airbrakes and massive flaps. the Firefly has the glorious flaps that extend downward allowing you to turn with the best of them. Cool addition. But not as useful as being premium would imply.
Can we make the wings folded also? Like in that first photo?
This is one example of the problems with BR. Wyvern is similar to AD2 - lots of ordinance pushes it's BR high, but the performance is very moderate. It might have a place in mixed battle, but in pure air battle this bird will have serious problems.
That's either a TK in spawn or this thing is obviously already broken. No way it keeps up with a J7W1! ;) Looks nasty tho...me like!
was looking through the old updated british aviation in war thunder thread to see what was planned and got excited for this only today just to have that excitement quashed because of premium! c'mon theres plenty of oddities that make far more unusual and premium worthy aircraft ! :(
Beautiful! Thanks you so much dev team, well done!
what about seafire 47 and sea fury. Their engine output really needs some fix.
