The Centurion family

At the start of the 1950s the Swedish military realized that they had to modernize their armoured forces. The M/42 tanks couldn’t really compete with American Pattons or Soviet IS-3 tanks, and it took a lot of time to create new designs from scratch. Consequently, the Swedish Armed Forces decided to obtain British Centurions: those were tanks with good firepower, decent mobility, a well-designed crew compartment… and almost untapped potential for future upgrades.
