The Challenger Mk.3 is an upgraded modification of the well-known British Challenger MBT, introducing, most notably, additional reactive armour elements to bolster the vehicle’s protection against HEAT rounds. Meet the new and improved Challenger MBT coming to War Thunder as part of the upcoming update 1.85!
Briefly: An upgraded modification of the Challenger MBT with add-on ERA elements that boost the vehicle’s protection.
Several updates ago, we introduced the mighty Challenger Mk 2 MBT to the top rank of the British ground forces tree, giving British tankers their own modern high performance MBT, as a counter to other nation’s vehicles with similar performance. In the upcoming update 1.85, we are pleased to present a new modification of the revered Challenger Mk 2, sporting additional ERA and composite armour packs that increase the vehicle’s protection.
The overall performance of the new Challenger Mk.3 doesn’t change compared to the existing Mk.2 already available in War Thunder. The vehicle still uses the same engine, suspension, gun, ammunition and armour layout. However, what does separate the Mk.3 from the Mk.2 is the addition of add-on ERA and composite armour elements to the front and sides of the vehicle’s hull.
The add-on ERA packs cover the vehicle’s lower front glacis plates, thus greatly increasing protection against HEAT rounds. The vehicle’s simple metal sheet side skirts were also replaced with composite armour screens on the front and rear portions of the hull sides, whereas ERA blocks cover the centre, offering increased protection for the fighting compartment against HEAT rounds. Additionally, all ammunition is now stowed in armoured bins on the Challenger Mk.3, thus decreasing the chances of a penetrating shot igniting the stowed rounds.
Overall, the Challenger Mk.3 offers improved protection against enemy fire and greatly increases survivability compared to the familiar Mk.2 model. We’re sure that seasoned Challenger drivers will make excellent use of the this new addition to their top tier lineup!
Be sure to try out the new Challenger Mk.3 main battle tank, coming to the top rank of the British ground forces tree with the upcoming War Thunder update 1.85. In the meantime, stay tuned to the news to see what else update 1.85 has in store for you. Until then, happy hunting tankers!

I find your lack of L26 disturbing... Also, will the ERA be an unlockable upgrade module, or present on the tank in stock form?
Yes i was really hoping for the L26 to come with the Mk 3 but we'll just have to make do with the ERA, and it better come in stock form otherwise there's no real difference, just grinding the mk2 again to get some ERA this time
All answers (2)TougeMistro, There'll be very little reason for this tank if it does NOT receive L26, which, may I point out, is far less effective than the OFL 120 G1 on the AMX-40 at a lower br, and VASTLY inferior to DM/JM 33
Do you want top tier tanks to be a easy point and click battle where armor and weakspots are irrelevant?
All answers (6)kololz, It already is.
Are you going to remove the stock practice round? (Apds l15) and give it the l23 stock with the l23a1 as an upgrade?
lol why dont give us L26 ?
Ms_Pain, I feel like the l26 could be added later, first I want the stock APDS to be an APFSDS.
The single most important problem with the Challenger...which isn't fixed with this new tank
Looks like this will be a separate vehicle. Unlike some certain tank of other nation, which have a module of the same role, but with cost of 40k RP, instead of 390k. Great move.
Except the upgrade your refering to is external only, whilst Russia also has several other MBTs at the top to fill a lineup. Britian does not, and the Mk 3 has internal diffrences, so a seperate vehicle is more logical.
All answers (7)Smin1080p, So, we have literally a backup with cost of 390k RP. Great.
Now you don't need to use Backups, but instead of that you have multiple “Top Tier“ tanks in your Lineup. I bet many people woll agree
All answers (3)TheCrackGamer420, Now you need to spade yet another top-tier tank for it to be in playable state.
*Tea Power Intensifies*
not really , without l26 it lacks firepower mobility also armour compared to its oponents
All answers (5)anuluuu, Well than try to go back in time and tell them that for Gods sake they shall install a 1500hp engine and give the lower plate composite armor other than that there isn't much you can change about the tank, it was never meant for War Thunder (fast pase, Close Quarter combat). And as far as Ammo goes it's on Gaijins side to decide, they always keep that as a balancing factor, looking at the DM33 and M833. Since the Brits usually play with the US they win a lot, Gaijin doesn't see a point in giv...
Not for me, as I said in my comment, why if it doesnt change overall performance isnt it just an upgrade to the current challenger as a module and instead give the players something more interesting or different to get? EG VFM5, Vickers 7/2, STRV 103, something by the South Africans maybe, heck, leopard with IWS gun or challenger with L30 would be more interesting then this lol.
All answers (1)mitchverr12345, why would the british get the strv 103 its not british the only things from the cents are road wheels and the gun was developed from the l7 and some minor things other than that there is nothing british about it
Ammo options are still terrible compared to the russians, germans or the japanese... "nice" addition... yeah sure... Americans too have underpowered ammo. Just look at the Type 90, ok? What can you see there? Don't tell me that you give them the lolpen tank just because their top tier lineup is bad. This is not how balance should work.
The type90 has 0 survivability, barely any armor, and never had any other shells than the jm33 and the heat-fs (so what do you think it should use?). It's a gun on tracks which I imagine is the balancing factor
All answers (1)Eonymia, people complain and bitch and are just brain dead don't waste your time.
Look at penetration values of the JM33 at 30 & 60 degrees between 500 and 2000m where it matters, not 0 degree at 10m please and you will realize that the JM33 round is by far not the best APFSD round in the game the way it is modeled, which is wrong, but still, not even close to being the best.
No offense, but in tierVI battle, APFSDS still kick Challenger's balls off.
Especially since it faces a newer era of APFSDS than its armour was designed for. Considering it was solely built to counter the T-55s and T-62s used in the Gulf War.
All answers (2)*FireWarrior2013, The Challenger was built and put into service quite a few years before the Gulf war and if anything it was built to fight T-72s - not T-55s and T-62s that even a Centurion could fight.
To clear up some confusion - The Challenger Mk.3 with the additional ERA screens will be a completely new vehicle to the British tree and NOT a researchable upgrade to the existing Challenger Mk.2.
This is so sad, can we change the cost of T-64BV module to 390k RP?
All answers (11)SoloWing_Makarov, T-64B upgrade is purely an external change of armour. This goes deeper than that.
Thank you for clarifying :)
All answers (1)bacongaming, the reason for this is probably so britan has more top tier tanks instead of them having only 1 top tier mbt they will now have 2 i can understand its kinda annoying but its still better for their general lineup
"we introduced the mighty Challenger 2 MBT"... editing mistake?
'Several updates ago, we introduced the mighty Challenger 2 MBT to the top rank of the British ground forces tree' -talking about the other one
All answers (2)Oxygen_Thief, That's the Challenger 1 Mk.2..... extremely different tank to the Challenger 2......
Indeed a typo, thanks for highlighting. Its been fixed to Mk 2 now.
"The overall performance of the new Challenger Mk.3 doesn’t change compared to the existing Mk.2 already available " then why didnt you make this an upgrade pack and add a more interesting or different vehicle for the brits? Say the vickers 7/2, VFM 5, a warrior varient with a main gun, CVRT, STRV 103 (trialled by BAOR), a south African car, list goes on. Kinda disapointed, been waiting and hoping for something cool and unique for a long while.
its mainly to add another mbt to the british even though its not a super good tank it does expand their ability to perform on the ground because of another mbt making their lineups better a better round might have made it better but its better than nothing as it is now which is ok
This is cool an all but any chance there will be some French units coming in this patch
Wait and see :)
