The USSR light tank tech tree currently ends with the post-war PT-76. We present the ASU-85, which will take it's rightful place after the PT-76 in the tree and become a top tank at rank IV. What is the ASU-85?
The ASU, or aviadesantnaya samokhodnaya ustanovka (air-landing self-propelled gun), armed with an 85mm cannon, was developed in the post-war Soviet Union as a vehicle for Soviet airborne landing troops. It was intended to be air-dropped and reinforce infantry in offense or defense with its powerful artillery fire directly on the battlefield. This SPG was the logical successor to the ASU-57, and from 1959, it replaced its predecessor in the forces.
Light, small and agile
The ASU-85 is based on the PT-76 amphibious tank already familiar to our players. To reduce its dimensions and increase its compactness, the ASU-85 received no rotating turret. Its powerful cannon was installed directly in the hull. Outwardly, this makes the ASU similar to other classic self-propelled guns, reduces its profile, allows its crew to work in more comfortable conditions and speeds up the cannon reload time. Obviously, the SPG had to be made as light as possible for airborne transportation and landing. Because of this, it was decided in the design phase not to give it thick armour. As a result, its armour is quite light (45 mm maximum at the front), although it is placed at a high angle on the frontal hull.
In the game, the ASU-85 takes the role of a light and mobile support SPG: Although the 85mm cannon has an ammo complement of just 39 rounds, it can fire with improved post-war ammunition. The vehicle’s small dimensions and low profile are its main advantages in laying an ambush. Quickly capturing an enemy point and lying in wait, or simply ambushing the target in one direction and then change position quickly – this is the style that perfectly suits all owners of this SPG. The important thing is to always take the first shot and don’t get shot in return. If you learn to fire accurately and quickly, and then don’t hang around, you’ll get along just fine with the ASU-85.
This air-landing self-propelled gun will arrive in the game soon™

are we going to get more top tier american heavy tanks because the m103 is the only one right now and i would love to see more if possible
Hopefully not. The M103 is already ridiculous enough.
@Master_100 what is that supposed to mean?
Ok, so looks like a Soviet equivalent to the Nashorn. If it's based on the PT-76 chassis, does that mean it will be able to float on water?
Historically this thing was not amphibious, it was just based on the lightest tank chassis available.
This looks really nice and sleek!
That's great! :D I didn't know that some other tanks were based on PT-76. When we are going to get our French Ground Forces? This year?! :D
Weak tanks? I see how much you know about WW2 history.France had one of the best tanks at the start of WW2.They didn't get eliminated, this is not WWE match -.-. If you want to know how they failed during the attack by Germany,I will say. For example France had B1 heavy tank and S35 Somua with 65mm of frontal armour. Back then Germany only had Pz.35,Pz.II and Pz.III and all those tanks could not penetrate them from even a medium range. French lost all thier tanks because of bombers like Ju87.
And their silly baguettes... I meant... Commanders! Yes, Commanders!
Why is this considered a light tank? It's obviously a TD...
The TD line too full for the Russian Tree lol?
Just because a vehicle doesn't have a turret doesn't automatically mean TD. The lack of a turret was to save as much weight as possible, as this vehicle was to be deployed behind enemy lines, or in hotzones where vehicles could not drive there. The ASU-85 was not designed for just tank-on-tank. It was also designed for supporting VDV in attacking positions and whatnot. The no turret issue was later rectified when the BMD-1 entered service.
today something horrible happened to me.... i bounced pt-76 with my cheerioteer'sabot round from 10 m range it was so sad and wierd
Welcome to Gajin, comrade.
Awwww! It's SO FREAKING CUTE! But will it be amphibious? It was based on the PT (my fav Russian tank), so will it float too? Anyway, I will definitely go unlock Tier V for the Russians now :)
Actually, it would be awesome if WT did some kind of co-op mission where you have to do an air drop with tanks like the Sheridan and the ASU series... that would be the BEST.
It won't float, the whole amphibious thing was removed from the chassis.
Forgive me, but why is there a constant urge to add Soviet vehicles (planes and tanks) into the game every patch? It seems that every patch this game goes through some new Soviet tank or plane is added that seems inappropriate for the game. This game is advertised as a WWII combat game, yet currently you're adding tanks that are used in 1960-1970! I know there is no cut-off date anymore, but why not focus on things like a Japanese Tank tree, or Italian Tree in general instead of these tanks?
Have you seen the Soviet middle light tank branch? They need to add vehicles to that branch to flush it out and give those tanks more of a fighting chance. Japanese Tanks, French Tanks and the Italians are being worked on, fear not. We'll hear something about either one of those tech trees here soon.
Japanese tanks coming out this year, once they are out French and Italian will be worked on, as from the Q&A.
Could it be a possibility you guys will be adding a Heavy German Bomber for the update as well?
*Cough He 177 Grief cough cough awesome looking cough cough*
Has anyone suggested that fixing the load in to a tank match should be fixed?
