Matchmaking (MM) is a very important game mechanic which has to be clearly understandable to any player. Most players no doubt know about the limit on the +/- 1.0 BR variance of vehicles’ Battle Ratings when assembling teams. This means that when you prepare for the next battle, assemble a squad or return to a comfortable battle rank for you, you’re sure to pay attention to the BR of the vehicles in your selection.
But far fewer players know about the existence of another matchmaking rule – rank limitations.
This rule works like this: regardless of the resulting Battle Rating of an individual vehicle or a player’s lineup of vehicles, matchmaking is calculated for opponents whose top vehicle’s rank differs from the player’s highest vehicle’s rank by no more than one (either higher or lower).
Complicated? On paper, sure. In reality, this rule activates very rarely, since even without it, the Battle Ratings of vehicles in most cases fall within the acceptable limitations of ranks. But there are individual examples of vehicles whose Battle Rating does not prevent an encounter between, for example, a vehicle at the lower end of rank three with a vehicle at the top end of rank one. At the same time, in spite of the seemingly large variance and the resulting concern that a vehicle at the top end of rank one won’t be able to take on a vehicle at the bottom end of rank three, in practice it all turns out differently and the vehicles would have comfortably fought with each other – if not for the limitation rule on ranks.
We strive not only to support optimal balance among all vehicles represented in War Thunder, but also to make the balancing mechanic simple and easy to understand for any player.
This means that the next logical step in improving our matchmaking mechanism is additional development of a simple and understandable Battle Rating system by making an exception to the limitation rule on ranks.
We’ll use some examples to explain this. In the majority of battles, no changes will be apparent – matchmaking will, as ever, be determined based on the Battle Rating of vehicles. However, in rare cases, the game will be a little easier for individual vehicles – both for their owners and for players who encounter them in battle.
Let’s take a look at Germany’s aviation tech tree. At the time of writing, the attacker aircraft Hs.129B-3 has a rating of 3.0 in Arcade Battles. According to MM rules, it can fight against vehicles between BR 2.0 and 4.0. Now look at the Battle Rating of the He.112B-0 – it is 2.3 BR. I.e., by matchmaking rules, a meeting between these aircraft is more than possible, and in a duel, the Heinkel fighter would most likely surpass the Henschel bomber – if it weren’t for the rule that previously forbade an encounter between a rank three attacker aircraft and a rank one fighter.
Greater variety of vehicles in battles while maintaining a comfortable balance of power, and in some cases a somewhat faster start to the battle! This will work in all cases – after all, before this rule is rescinded, a very effective vehicle would never encounter an opponent more than one rank higher regardless of how high we take its Battle Rating, this means it would still undeservedly end up among the top selected for battle. Similarly, a less effective vehicle had no chance in encountering other less effective vehicles at lower ranks forcing them instead to meet more powerful machines.

What about no equal amount of vehicles with same BR? I play a lot were in one team there is for example 8 planes at 8.0 and in scenond there is 4 at 8.0 and 4 7.0
So,rank limit will be disable?
Yes, so that matchmaking times will be improved, at the cost of screwing over maybe a few Tier 1s.
This probably turns out to be good change, at least for some fighters. What I don't get is change in rank for T32, with BR 7.3 it was nightmare to play on rank IV, now on rank V if woult be flatly imposible (at least for me anyway :)) but i presume that there is reson for this decision, because you probably just don't hate the tank :-) But i would be really intrested to know your reasoning behind this change, could it be posible to eleborate this a bit? or see some stats? :-)
Battle rating and Match Making does not affect air game mode but ground as well. Perhaps the model will improve the air battles, not too sure about the ground. 1st off, in my opinion the 1,0 full BR range is too high. Although HEATFS shells have been reformed [and I do disagree with that along with their price being very high] they can still penetrate almost any tank. A 6,7 BR [and in their mojority do not get HEATFS with the only exemption the 5,7 RU light tank] is facing 7,7 tanks with HEATFS.
whiteout heat see on the pen from brits, ther can pen in tier 1 near all to tier 4 maybe not on front. have hits from gbr trough 3 armor and the bullet broking in the tank on pieces---- cant fly out---- must kill me :) other side tier 1 brit near all a 1 hit vechile if you find them.
When will this rule be implemented??
MM works perfect for tier 1 to 4 vehicles in air I believe jets needs either more separation using BR or a 2 tier system because essentially there are 3 types of jet classes 1. early first gen jets 2. late first gen jets and 3. 2nd gen jets so when sabres and migs fight meteors no matter how good the pilot is, that meteor pilot can be killed quite easily in the case of smart 2nd gen pilots. so more jets are required for balance just look at tiers 3 and 4 where planes have small BR crossover
I can't enter in the game it stops at the launcher and it doesn't download the update. What can i do? pls reply ;)
I still dont think the late bf109s(g-6 and onwards) deserve their br, they are hardly any different and the only way to get a kill is from distracted enemies or boom and zoom, but the opponents climb higher.
Iv'e seen the MM as fair a lot of the time (except KV-2, I feel as though its under-tiered when I see it with my Pz IV F2 in RB (BR 3.3)). I dont know what this will mean for me at the moment as a Tanker, and i'll soon find out. Also, tankettes?
They would be useless, they only have Machine guns, and not the SPAA type.
MooseTheSyrupMan, Great scouts and distractions though. Their small size and mobility would be perfect for distracting the enemy while avoiding fire and also would be good for scouting without being seen. They could be added as long as a new kind of award is added to supplement their efforts. Then again, it also depends on if the player using the tankette is smart enough to use it properly. Taking a Sherman head-on is bound to end badly in a tankette. But flanking and distracting a Sherman would be great.
so does this mean that all the russian tanks that are t2 at 3.7 to 4.7 finally gonna get to see br of a high tier? cause t2 4.7 never gonna see t4,and at moment russian tree is set up this way its the reason alot of peeps claim bias i think ,
And the russian air tree is the opposite - low BR with higher tiers. This is huge upset to how matches will work. The H8K2 (BR 3.3, tier 1) will see a RIDICULOUS variety of planes up to tier 4 that it otherwise wouldn't face due to being tier 1 in the old system.
