Matchmaking (MM) is a very important game mechanic which has to be clearly understandable to any player. Most players no doubt know about the limit on the +/- 1.0 BR variance of vehicles’ Battle Ratings when assembling teams. This means that when you prepare for the next battle, assemble a squad or return to a comfortable battle rank for you, you’re sure to pay attention to the BR of the vehicles in your selection.
But far fewer players know about the existence of another matchmaking rule – rank limitations.
This rule works like this: regardless of the resulting Battle Rating of an individual vehicle or a player’s lineup of vehicles, matchmaking is calculated for opponents whose top vehicle’s rank differs from the player’s highest vehicle’s rank by no more than one (either higher or lower).
Complicated? On paper, sure. In reality, this rule activates very rarely, since even without it, the Battle Ratings of vehicles in most cases fall within the acceptable limitations of ranks. But there are individual examples of vehicles whose Battle Rating does not prevent an encounter between, for example, a vehicle at the lower end of rank three with a vehicle at the top end of rank one. At the same time, in spite of the seemingly large variance and the resulting concern that a vehicle at the top end of rank one won’t be able to take on a vehicle at the bottom end of rank three, in practice it all turns out differently and the vehicles would have comfortably fought with each other – if not for the limitation rule on ranks.
We strive not only to support optimal balance among all vehicles represented in War Thunder, but also to make the balancing mechanic simple and easy to understand for any player.
This means that the next logical step in improving our matchmaking mechanism is additional development of a simple and understandable Battle Rating system by making an exception to the limitation rule on ranks.
We’ll use some examples to explain this. In the majority of battles, no changes will be apparent – matchmaking will, as ever, be determined based on the Battle Rating of vehicles. However, in rare cases, the game will be a little easier for individual vehicles – both for their owners and for players who encounter them in battle.
Let’s take a look at Germany’s aviation tech tree. At the time of writing, the attacker aircraft Hs.129B-3 has a rating of 3.0 in Arcade Battles. According to MM rules, it can fight against vehicles between BR 2.0 and 4.0. Now look at the Battle Rating of the He.112B-0 – it is 2.3 BR. I.e., by matchmaking rules, a meeting between these aircraft is more than possible, and in a duel, the Heinkel fighter would most likely surpass the Henschel bomber – if it weren’t for the rule that previously forbade an encounter between a rank three attacker aircraft and a rank one fighter.
Greater variety of vehicles in battles while maintaining a comfortable balance of power, and in some cases a somewhat faster start to the battle! This will work in all cases – after all, before this rule is rescinded, a very effective vehicle would never encounter an opponent more than one rank higher regardless of how high we take its Battle Rating, this means it would still undeservedly end up among the top selected for battle. Similarly, a less effective vehicle had no chance in encountering other less effective vehicles at lower ranks forcing them instead to meet more powerful machines.

If ranks where replaced by year of introduction and the rule to limit MM to rank +-1 was still there, we would have both balanced games (thanks to BR) and plausible encounters (thanks to year limit) = historical matchmaking. Some players want to limit the BR brackets (to +- 0.7) : this would lead to too homogeneous battles, it is not fun when all machines are equivalent. On the contrary a BR brackets a little wider BUT WITH YEAR OF INTRODUCTION LIMITS (maybe +-2 or +- 1.5) would be more diverse.
That's a bad idea and you should understand what you're suggesting regarding the planes in the game already before saying it. It would be completely imabalanced as the year means nothing: OS2U kingfisher is from 1940 and so is the Pe-8, and P-36G. B-17E is from 1941. Meteor F. Mk 3, La-7 and Me 410 B-series are all from 1944.
Aubreykun, You didn't get it. My suggestion still uses BR for balance. It only introduces limits on ranks (ranks now being date of introduction) so as to limit unrealistic encounters like PT-76 fighting Tiger I, T-34 of 1941/2 fighting M24 of 1944, Me163 fighting Korean war jets, etc.
nice. the vickers tempest at 4.0 tier 4 might actually stand a chance in a fight now it can see a tier 2
Vickers tempest is not a fighter. It is meant to kill tanks and pillboxes. Anyway if it meets a BR=4,0 fighter of any rank it will die. Changing the MM rule here does not change anything to this. Wait for enemy fighters to be engaged and then sneak to kill ground targets. Run away if you are detected.
bonobo_, Im talking more about using it in ground forces, putting it in your 4.0 tank line up with the Churchill resulted in horrible match making since most of the other 4.0 tanks are tier 2
Another MM mechanism with both realism and balance would to build teams by balancing the sum of BR on both teams, while limiting the vehicles in a bracket determined only by the YEAR of introduction of each vehicle. E.g. Battle bracket = years 1942-1943. This means balancing the teams rather than balancing individual vehicles. Then players would have to use their vehicles according to their specific abilities (e.g. light tank to scout and CAP rather then fight). = Historical MM with team balance
i tried but i cant read your descriptions my eng is bad :), but i think current MM is good and dont have problem
when i play with Fw 190 A-8 maybe i see a F-86F-2 Sabre in battle with new MM system, right ?
"Greater variety of vehicles in battles" as an pro-argument ? The more "variety of vehicles", the less balance in battles. You're going to make polayers even more angry than before. Nobody cares of the queue time if the battles are long, interesting and bring good rewards. What's the point in playing a F2A in AB if you're going to meet premium P47Ds or playing Ki102, P38E and other 3.0 vehicles while you're able to end versus LA7, P51D etc ? How do you really think this is going to end ?
War Thunder MM was born broken. The only games I see are with +1.0 BR and in some occasions just +0.7 BR. That's the only kind of battles you see when you hit the max level on your account. At least in WoT there are some game where the MM is decent....
Please don't bring urban legends to the table, we have enough valid arguments and do not need this type of hoaxes.
Just keep balancig game and more players will come GL!
Hi sorry i cant read all the comment is like novell, its good many interesting. I stay on ground, in english tier 1 have we to time from reserve to 2.7 BR the top light tier 1 is 1.3 BR again if i will use theValentine Mk I (2.7) 1.3 again 3.7 br armored vechile pz 3j, m4,m24,t34 42, kv1 lv1 if i use my head is the only 1 possibility to run away, if i can. I take not to heart, just make not happy play the frag role. In the air the "little" one have some strongsides, like turn the biplans better.
you say when i play with Fw 190 A-4 maybe i see a F-86F-2 Sabre in battle ? its ridiculous
FW190A4 is 4.3. It can meet planes at 5.3 at tier4, even though it is tier 2. F86F2 is 9.0. It can see 8.0s. You'll never fight a jet with a plane under 5.0 br.
Tanks is the hardest but I'm not so good so have to take that in to account. I'f I cut off at say5.7br I still may get a 6.7-7.0 and if I drop to 5.0 I still get 6.3 and 6.7's so may three tanks levels are mess because I think the cut offs br rating is , well, very hard to cut off. Usually if I go below 6.0 I get a game sans high level IV or V's but not always. nevertheless, this is NOT a complaint, love the game, just an observation
