Get your pilot helmets on, it’s time for a new challenge! Today, we’re presenting the “Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses” (SEAD) event — a new asymmetrical game mode where one team takes on the role of the attackers, and the other team defends strategically important S-75 SAM positions.
Take part in this two day event and test out some new mechanics that we’re working on!
When: From April 22nd (11:00 GMT) until April 24th (11:00 GMT).
You can access the event from the hangar through: Events & Tournaments -> Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses
How the event works
The defending team in this event must protect AI controlled Soviet S-75 surface-to-air missile systems. Helping to defend these systems are AI controlled ZSU-23-4 “Shilka” anti-air vehicles. Both of these potent air defense systems pose a deadly threat to the attacking team — they’ll need to learn the terrain, come up with approach tactics and use the right selection of weaponry to be successful.
Roles and Objectives
Your mission is to destroy all S-75 SAM positions at all costs! Not only do the attackers have aircraft, they also have helicopters, opening up new possibilities for stealthy attacks and pinpoint missile strikes. The F-4E Phantom II serves as the primary strike force, equipped with rockets and bombs for ground targets, along with air-to-air missiles for engaging enemy aircraft. The AH-1F is armed with ATGMs and rockets, capable of providing more precise air-to-ground fire to take out the air defense missile systems.
Your mission is to defend the S-75 positions from the attacking enemy! Coordinate your actions with other players and build a layered defense to counter the attacking team. You’ll be equipped with the MiG-21bis, armed with air-to-air missiles to repel the enemy.
Event Features
Here are some key event features that are useful to know:
- The gameplay in this event is asymmetrical. One team attacks and the other defends. This requires you to adapt to different roles and strategies.
- There’s no markers in this mode, so you’ll not see enemy markers on the map. Use your aircraft’s systems and piloting skills to find and destroy the enemy.
- Each player has 3 respawns, giving both teams the flexibility to experiment with tactics, and giving the attacking players the ability to use different types of vehicles.
- For the first time in an air mode, the attacking team has access to both helicopters and planes, offering unique opportunities in coordinating attacks to take enemies out from afar and support friendly planes.
- All players that have an aircraft of rank V or higher in their hangar can participate in the event.
- The vehicles that you’ll use in the event are automatically assigned and don’t need to be purchased.
- Vehicles have the spawn cost in SL, which will be refunded if the plane is not destroyed when the mission ends or if you exit the plane in the safe exit zones. The amount of refunded SL depends on the condition of the aircraft.
- Safe exit zones become available for aircraft once all the weapons of a certain type have been expended. If you have spawned in with air-to-ground weaponry, you will need to use all of it, air-to-air missiles are not taken into account, however, if you have spawned in with just air-to-air missiles, you will need to use all of them.
- You’ll be able to earn research points and Silver Lions by taking part in the event.
Why not in Random Battles?
Asymmetrical modes are not for everyone, and they have their own specific approach. As players queue in random battles with their own custom lineup, if they were to randomly encounter a game mode like this, they may incidentally have an ineffective selection of vehicles that aren’t suitable for a more specialized mission like this one. “Suppression of Enemy Air Defense” requires certain vehicles and weapons for interesting and effective gameplay. In addition, the difficulty of the event (due to the presence of S-75s and a large number of very effective Shilkas) may be too high for random battles, where players often use a variety of vehicles to complete more general objectives.
“Suppression of Enemy Air Defense” is just the beginning!
We’re using this event as a testing ground for ideas that we plan to use in future large-scale modes. This scenario will be one of the missions in the “Aerial Warfare” operations, one of which will feature in the future in World War Mode. In Aerial Warfare, players will only have access to aircraft (ground vehicles will be AI), and the focus will be on aerial combat and the completion of strategic objectives. We’ll tell you more about Aerial Warfare at a later date!
Developers note: We would like to note that ARMs (Anti-Radiation Missile) of the period reflected in the event were not as effective in many cases compared to their more modern counterparts. In some situations, they would simply not hit their intended targets without any mistakes from the pilot, and it would not be very clear to the player as to why the missile has missed. For this event, the combination of early SAMs vs aircraft with unguided weaponry works well and provides counteracting gameplay, so ARMs won’t be featured in it.
We understand many of you wish to see ARM weaponry, and it is part of our longer term considerations, particularly in the modern gameplay era, however it is still too early to go into further detail about this right now. So stay tuned!
Don’t miss the chance to participate in this unique event from April 22nd to April 24th! Make sure to prepare for intense air battles that require teamwork and excellent piloting — see you in the sky!

Comments will be premoderatedOnly issue I have with the event is the fact the F4E doesn't get its Walleyes for this mission
This is by far THE WORST event added to the game in a long time. The idea behind the mode is FUN, and can be great for the game. However, WHY does the F-4E only get dumb fire bombs, dumb fire rockets, and no choice to use AGMS???? This is ridiculous, and completely one sided in favor of the Soviet team. Played like 6 games and lost each and every one.
2 days is just not long enough even as a baseline. I don't feel the intent to make it work from such a short period. We really need this kind of gameplay, please don't mess it up.
This gamemode definetly got lots of potential, but we need to balance things out a little more for the USA side. USA only got dumb weapons which make it way too hard to take down the SAM sites, since they're being protected by shilkas which are quite hard to take down without guided munition. Above all that you need to deal with enemy team who have the same amount of jets as you while their only objective is killing you, whiich make things much easier for their side. Still a fun and cool ...
ngl a SEAD event without ARMs feels like bread without flour
Where do we leave feed back? Because this is wildly unbalanced.
I think this is super cool that they are testing this, having helicopters in air battles having a dedicated attack role to destroy ground vehicles was and still is a suggestion that a lot of people want in both air RB and sim. I really want this to be an official game mode in both game modes to add gameplay to the game as well as another way to grind out the helicopter tech tree, as PvE is too slow to grind and doesn't give enough RP to justify playing it, especially when premium players use it.
Oh cool.
The shilkas might be over performing a bit. Also they were not seen in these numbers until 1975 or so.
(use helicopters, which will allow you to use smoke flares to mark the point of dropping bombs, as well as S-75 SAMs near targets and airfields, as well as good cover for aircraft carriers and airbases - because on your maps, the enemy is quietly circling over our airfield and does not let us take off, immediately shooting us down on takeoff!).
