The Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile and artillery system capable of tracking and killing several air targets comes as a new top-tier SPAAG for the Soviets.
96K6 Pantsir-S1, SPAAG, USSR, rank VII
Features:
- Missiles and automatic cannons
- Able to attack up to 4 targets simultaneously
- Huge munition load
- Very high profile
- Poor protection
The 96K6 Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and artillery system, developed in the mid-1990s, was designed to protect strategically important areas, troops and long-range air defense systems. Due to the economic crisis in Russia, the development of the system was sluggish, but hot boosted in the late 90s, with new tactical requirements appearing for export of the system to the UAE. The modified Pantsir with a long-range radar also began to enter service with the Russian army, primarily in the air defense units. The version on the chassis of the KamAZ 8x8 truck appeared in 2006, and after successfully passing the tests, the Pantsir-S1 modification was put into trial operation, and in 2012 commissioned for service. At the moment, systems of the Pantsir family are in service with the Russian army and are constantly upgraded. The air defense system is intensively exported, the largest foreign operators of the Pantsir systems are Morocco, Syria, Algeria, Iraq and other countries.
The 96K6 Pantsir-S1 will appear in War Thunder with the release of the upcoming major update and will become the new top Soviet anti-aircraft vehicle. Being unique in its combat capabilities, the Pantsir combines a mid-range detection radar, 12 effective surface-to-air missiles and rapid-fire 30-mm cannons with HE and AP belts. The real “Sky Guardian” is reporting for service!
Not so long ago, the Tor-M1 air defense system was added to the game, which is capable of attacking two targets at once in a small sector. Pantsir-S1 (Russian for “carapace”) is capable of acquiring targets at distances up to 20 km, as well as simultaneously tracking and firing in the 45x45 degree sector up to four targets at the same time! Let's be honest, the scenario of the appearance of four air targets at once in one sight is unlikely for mixed battles in War Thunder, but if such a scenario comes true, you will be prepared! Jokes aside, a well-positioned Pantsir under ideal conditions alone is able to protect the team from, in general, all enemy aircraft approaching from airfields and at almost any altitude. If the pilot slips the launch and does not maneuver, he will meet with the Pantsir missile. The radar very quickly determines the distance to an air target, and missiles can also be guided by the half-lead method, which is handy against aircraft at extreme attack angles.
In addition to missiles, the system includes a pair of twin-barreled 30-mm cannons with an overall rate of fire of up to 5,000 rounds per minute and a huge ammo capacity. The cannons literally tear apart low-flying air targets and are able to hit light armored vehicles and even some tanks.
The Pantsir-S1 system is built on a KamAZ 8x8 army heavy truck chassis. The truck moves confidently on paved roads, but off-road causes problems due to the heavy weight of the Pantsir unit and a very long chassis. The vehicle has poor armor of up to 6 mm, and with the radar antenna unfolded, it becomes one of the tallest vehicles in War Thunder. Pantsir-S1 can be seen from afar and dies easily from any enemy fire including ordinary machine guns.
Pantsir-S1 is undoubtedly one of the most advanced anti-aircraft systems in the game. It will appear in War Thunder with the release of the Sky Guardians major update, which is almost completed by the dev team. The update is coming soon, and the new devblogs will come sooner!

Comments will be premoderatedHow is it possibly fair for this to be added when no other nation in the game has anywhere equilvent SPAA. On top of this Russia has the strongest CAS options currently in the game and this addition makes fighter jets going to counter Russian CAS even harder to accomplish now.
I guess that's what Americans get for having Tomcat with only ARH missiles in game?
Remember when the Tunguska was added and CAS was completely 1-sided because the other team's CAS had no chance. Yep. You've done it again.
Really, so now russia has best everything? You should apologize everyone who got destroyed lineup or nerfed vehilces into oblivion for BaLaNcE
The Chunguska was already best AA, let them add a more powerful version, doesn't really matter any more tbh
Of course Russia has best CAS like F16 and A7, or CAS with thermal imager. Of course Russia has best radar, 6 bvr missiles, and best close range missile, like AIM9L, of course Russia has 3 4gen planes ans US only 1. Of course Russian tanks has best apfsds, or best tanks like Strv 122. (NO)
There's no way you guys see no problem with this addition, several nations still lack CAS options with laser guidance and are stuck with daylight only weapon systems (Russia not being one of them of course). This is a 2012 system facing 70s and 80s aircraft, the technological gap is massive and this will only recreate the MiG-27K domination of the past year. How could anyone on their right mind think this unit without any equivalents is a good addition at this time?
Pretty sure Russia is the only major country in game to lack the thermals on top-tier planes, even on premiums.
Really disappointing to see a nation with basically complete air domination in ground rb get the most powerful spaa in game yet again while countries like Israel have nothing but a M163 with 4 stingers for their top SPAA
Then there's Italy with just the Otomatic and Japan has just the Type 93
Now add counterpart to every nation, so we can erase CAS once and for all
Issue of other nations simply not having counterparts.
Counterpart of SPAA is airplane, Einstein.
Phew. Was getting tired of my mig-27 getting shot down by enemy fighters while I dropped bombs from 10km. It's about time they done something about the terribly unbalanced fighter problem! Keep it up.
Yay! Another overpowered Soviet AA vehicle!
Nice, now we have spaag with 50km range of radar visibility, lock of which won't trigger RWR, but still can't have anti-radar missiles for made-up reasons.
It's great how Russia gets an even more advanced SPAA System than it already had (its literally from 2012), when there are other nations like Japan, Italy and Israel with no viable long range SAM (Type 91 and Stinger Missiles should be way better, than they are now in the game). Russia didn't need another top tier SPAA, other nations do...
