The LVT-4/40 is a later development of the well-known American WWII amphibious tank in service with the French army. After WWII, French engineers modified the vehicle and outfitted some units with the Bofors 40mm anti-air cannon in an effort to increase its effectiveness against ground targets. This unique vehicle awaits tankers as one of the main prizes of the upcoming new season of War Thunder Battle Pass!
LVT-4/40, light tank, France, rank II, Premium
Features
- Rapid-firing 40mm Bofors L/60 cannon
- Spacious hull
- Light armor
- Low gun depression angle
- Premium bonuses
In the wake of WWII, France possessed a large number of American vehicles in its service, including the LVT series of amphibious vehicles. These, along with other armored vehicles, were supplied to France as a short-term solution to rebuild the French military after the war. During the Indochina War of the early 1950’s, LVTs in French service were modified to carry the 40 mm Bofors anti-air gun as it proved to be more effective against ground targets than the standard 37 mm cannon. These modified French LVTs also participated in the Suez Crisis of 1956, which also marked their final operational use.
The LVT and its variants can be found in several research trees in the game, making it a familiar vehicle to many War Thunder tankers. This unique French modification of the renowned American amphibious tank combines the vehicle’s existing excellent combat capabilities with the deadly 40mm Bofors L/60 gun, feared by both aviators and tankers alike for its high rate of fire and ballistic properties.
Thanks to the 40mm Bofors gun, the French LVT-4/40 is a truly versatile machine. Not only being capable of downing hostile aircraft, the Bofors gun is notorious among tankers for its punchiness and armor-piercing qualities, provided the correct ammunition is being used. As a result, the LVT-4/40 will be a true force to be reckoned with on the battlefields and not to be easily underestimated. However, the vehicle’s large size makes it easily spottable even from greater distances and the open fighting compartment makes it inviting for pilots to attempt a potentially lethal strafing run. On the other hand, the vehicle’s large size is also a strength: it allows the tank to virtually absorb hostile fire, without risking damage to internal components or the crew!
Be sure to add the unique LVT-4/40 to your in-game collection by taking part in the upcoming new season of the War Thunder Battle Pass. Good hunting tankers!

this is not F111.We need F111.Give us F111.In regular tree
As someone who was about to quit due to lack of WW2 content and the almost loss of Backups and wagers stored . This puts a smile on my face. GJ
Nice vehicle! My question is when does the french Navy arrive?
I thought this was a devblog for the next update and thought maybe an actual fun vehicle is coming to the game, but not its just the dumb battlepass
Lol Gaijin seriously where are the VAB and ELC line tanks for France after years with nothing ? that's it ???
Question: Will this be the free vehicle or will there be a low tier aircraft as the free reward? I mean , I will still buy it , but just for knowlege!
Hum... not sure but I assume there will be a free aircraft since it was the custom through out 4 previous BPs. And the BR of this LVT is honestly quite low for the free vehicle
I would guess its the low Br first Battlepass vehicle like the T55E1, Matilda Hedgehog, Toldi and the Sd Kfz
10/10
nice ☻
Now THIS, this right here, is the kind of BP vehicles we need. Its unique, looks fun but won't be OP as hell (I'm looking at YOU KV-220) and will bring something to a nation sorely lacking. Now if the BP bird is decent I'm in like Flynn!
Really nice addition to the tech tree. I can understand it to be a premium, seeing this was a modification of a foreign model and not heavily produced either. Rank II means it will be available for basic daily tasks, which is neat. This said, I really hope Gaijin adds a French AA to fill the horrendous gap between the DCA-40 and the AMX-30 DCA. 4.3 to 8.3 is a (too) massive gap.
British tree is even worse....3.7 ► 8.0
Romek007, Got a South African AA truck though, but that doesn't solve the problem :(
finally I can sleep now
