The upcoming War Thunder update will see three new modifications of the legendary Russian tank being added to the game – the 1989 T-72B build, the 2011 T-72B3 and the latest 2016 T-72B3 build!
War Thunder tank commanders should by now be well familiar with the Soviet T-72, which was the most-produced tank in the second half of the 20th century. The present modifications; the T-72A and the T-72B perform rather well in rank VI battles but struggle quite a bit against the top-tier Western tanks. This can be explained for a number of reasons: their average mobility, lack of modern ERA and fire control systems, and insufficient destructive power of the shells. Fans of the Soviet/Russian armoured vehicle tech tree had much to think about, mainly because of an incredibly wide range of available T-72 modifications, both developed domestically and abroad.
In the upcoming major update, three new modifications of the tank will be added to War Thunder, and this will promote the T-72 from its duties in the secondary offensive front to the hottest top-dog assault lines. Please welcome the 1989 T-72B model, the 2011 T-72B3 model and it is the 2016 T-72B3 researchable modification, that will put the T-72 on the closest-possible level to modern MBTs!
T-72B (1989)
What first and foremost separates the 1989 T-72B modification from the rest is Kontakt-5, a second-gen explosive reactive armour system. The ERA blocks fitted at the front form a single plane with the hull, unlike with Kontakt-1 which is already well known to players. The turret containers are positioned at an angle toward each other, thus forming the build’s recognizable silhouette, which has been a common sight at Russian military parades and in Russian news stories. Kontakt-5 provides a significant boost to the tank’s frontal defences against both HEAT and kinetic. The fresh set of armour will allow you to spring upon enemies head-on, but keep in mind the vulnerable spots at the front of the turret – you’d do well to turn the gun slightly away from your opponent while reloading.
T-72B3 and modification T-72B3 UBH
T-72B3, main battle tank, USSR/Russia, VII rank
Pros
- Up-to-date sight with thermal imaging
- All-sector protection from HEAT rounds
- Good mobility
Cons
- Slow rear speed
- Low vertical aiming angles
A basic modernization of the T-72B tank, issued at the beginning of the 2010’s. The major difference here is a new sight with thermal imaging, which makes night battles much more comfortable; no advantages in mobility and protection though.
In the second half of 2010’s, a new modernization program was initialized, the T-72B3 (2016), often called the T-72B3 UBH (abbreviation in Russian for “improved battle characteristics”). This modification is researchable for the T-72B3 in the game, and it improves the combat potential of the vehicle greatly.
First of all, it features a new powerful 1130 hp engine, a new gun stabilizer, as well as advanced “Relikt” protection with ERA elements. The hull and turret sides are additionally covered with anti-HEAT screens. These improvements bring the old good T-72 to a level with the most advanced MBT’s in War Thunder.

M1128 MGS Stryker when??????
so your removing stock sabot replacing it with heat as other countries dont have a stock sabot i can see the idea but then you go add tanks like this, how are we supposed to fight them without sabot when its 2016 T-72B3? This was such a silly thing to do for "equality" no tank is the same and you are bunch of silly gooses for doing this. Please revert the changes, bring back stock APFSDS.
All these comments about the HEAT-FS changes.. and I agree. gaijin, you need to seriously fix this before you kill half the playerbase
I started playing in the alpha 8 years ago, just because I play planes and WT style because I love it, but at this rate the coronavirus or this society will kill me before I can play and enjoy modern jets and different new modes game ... very sad Gaijin, very sad what you do with this game.
Gaijin, I am an avid player of WT and I absolutely love the Soviet/Russian lines but, instead of adding new tanks/planes please work on re-balancing older tanks, addressing power creep, updating outdated textures and working on br decompression. I would love the game infinitely more if every time I queued for battle, I knew I could do meaningful damage to the top tier in the battle.
One question: does this mean we'll be seeing the T-90 in game? It's technically an evolution of the T-72 series. Or maybe the Objekt 187, since Kubinka supposedly finally got hold of one? And since we have some Ukrainian armor in game now, will we be seeing the T-84 capping off the T-80 line? There's even a model (Yatagan) that has the NATO standard 120mm gun/launcher that would be an interesting change of pace for Russian players used to the 125s.
I dont know how many times they have said this, THE T90 WILL BE IN THE GAME. Just not at this minute, so be happy with t72s ))))))
I don't know if my question will be see among all of those whiner and if I'll have an answer : Did the T-72B (1989) will be a standalone tank or a T-72B modification for the one in-game ? Because if the main and only feature is just an upgrade for the ERA armor... well as a modification for the T-72B would have been sufficient imo...
Will we see filler aircraft that are missing in between many lines of nations, America for example are missing many jet and propeller aircraft before suddenly jumping to Jets or Tran-sonic jet's to Supersonic's. Examples: F-101, F6U, F-84F, C-97, F-102, F-104, F-105, F-106, F-111, F-8. Not to mention other propeller aircraft. Also when will be able to customize the amount of fuel our aircraft's carry. Its annoying for people in jets to switch to minimum fuel only to have 8 minutes of it!..
This is awesome, random question about an Italian Vehicle. Will the "Semovente 149/40" ever be introduced to WT? One was produced, and it fired a hefty 46 kg shell (it was a 149.1 mm self-propelled artillery piece) designed by "Ansaldo" and is displayed in the "US Army Ordinance Museum." And I for one believe it would make an extremely interesting and exhilarating tank to command. There was one prototype built before Italy surrendered. Keep up the great work, just dont leave lower teirs behin...
where is the leopard2a6 tank?
