Continuing the highlighting of some of the new features in our Dagor Engine 5.0 graphical engine, that we are planning to present to War Thunder players in update 1.77. In today's devblog in connection with the new Dagor Engine 5.0, we would like to talk about two visual features: weather and environmental effects.
Rain effects
We have improved rain and rain water effects. Now raindrops will leave ripples on puddles and water surfaces. As well as that, streams of rain water will now flow down and across surfaces - stones, pavement, roofs and walls:
Layered fog
In update 1.77, our new graphical engine Dagor Engine 5.0 will bring fog and smoke effects to the game. Depending on the weather, fog can appear over rivers and lakes, and in valleys and fields. We have tried to make the fog effect as photo realistic as possible, the fog itself looks three-dimensional, has layers and a visual depth – in other words, it’s very similar to real fog.
Incidentally, in the future fog may influence gameplay – for example, by hiding the advance of an assault group of tank
Dynamic clouds and sun
Clouds and sun in our game now have their own life. Clouds move across the sky and don’t just hang in place. The sun also moves from East to West in an astronomically correct way, according to the date and time of a battle and geographical latitude of a location.
We plan to implement these changes after update 1.77 is released.

so does this mean we will get rainbows soon?
I hope to see advanced water physics. When the recoil action retracts the barrel, the water collected on the barrel suspends momentarily as the barrel below it retracts, then of course falls as a sheet of water. As well as muzzle pressure pushing the falling rain around it away, creating a pocket of open space. Oh, Gaijin. You never cease to satisfy me.
OMG! Finally, dynamic weather and time in WT! The improved weather effects look amazing. I have to ask, is anything being done to improve the LOD "pop-in" of shadows, trees, bushes and grass? Or the visual quality of clouds, smoke, fires and explosions?
"Ivan come here wat du you think about dis?" "But Vladimir don't we need to fix matchmaking and balance vehicles, should we not focus on that" "Wat iz you spik of Ivan,we need more puddles, more puddles less frames. Less frames you don't get sick when you driving your tank and drink Vodka." "Oh I know I know Vladimir,we should add heavy nVidia bias so AMD peasants learn their place" "Da commrade ,you speak wise. Here have a bottle"
What about the moon and stars for the night missions? Will they move realistically, too?
this is pretty cool, I love it, the thing that worries me its how will this affect the mayority of players against ULQ, will they be affected by this? or will they have clear sight of everything?
I want to sincerely thank whoever though to implement these changes. I'm tired of weather being underappreciated in games, especially in very atmospheric games like War Thunder.
Cool. Does this mean the nuclear sun will be removed? Really annoying when you have to face it and the other team has a massive advantage.
Can't wait to play this... with a new British tank
Will mud effects on tanks be refined so that tanks aren't entirely encased in mud after driving through totally flat ground?
