Have you ever wondered how the damage mechanics work for Aviation and Ground Forces function in War Thunder? Perhaps you were interested in finding out how realistic shells and ordinance was translated across to our virtual battlefields? Wonder no more!
War Thunder has a complex and realistic damage model that spans a wide range possibilities, situations and scenarios all with historical accuracy in mind. Each and every vehicle has its own unique damage model, faithfully recreated with every module, crew member and armour plate taken into consideration and functioning in game. In order to truly master the battlefields and join the ranks of the best pilots and tankers, it's important to understand how these mechanics work, how damage is calculated and what factors can affect received and delivered damage.
Distinguishing between Normal, Serious, Critical and Lethal damage and what this means for your vehicle in combat can help you plan and consider your actions and battle strategies before setting off into combat. Whilst your vehicle is your primary weapon in battle, knowledge is the key to victory!

hey gaijin!! like the articles wish more devlogs and stuff was posted everyday cause I love reading about all the news! sadly the comments seem to be saltier than the closed ships beta (lol).now ive got a question... could there be some realistic maps added or modified so that germans can shoot at some ligh pillboxes? I'm the king of the sandwiches (pbj assaulter) but lately ive been trying the germans out more. I don't like arcade as much and ive fount that the p61s cannons r great for pillboxs
ive been wanting to try out the do air defense fighter on ground targets because they have 4 to 8 cannons. hope u people have a happy thanksgiving.i already know what I'm thankfull for and its definetly war thunder. all u war thunder fans drop an o7 (its a man saluting if u didn't know)down below!!
Gaijin , can you improve Tank Gun sight mechanics ? currently Gun sight and Gunbarrel are not aiming at the same point but differently , either gun sight are on left side or right side the Cannon shell will not goes at where gun sight is aiming but to the left or right depending on where Tank Gun Sight placement , it okay at long range but at close range it will not hit where we want and has to compensate for gun sight placement At close range it really unusable .
Sorry man, but this was realistic. gunsights are calibrated for a specific range as optimum, any range other than that, you have parallax unless it is a coincidence sight (like tigers and panthers), which is what is causing your difficulty. The side to aim towards depends on the tank's historic gunner position, and you should practice on the practice range at various ranges to learn how to compensate
You clearly forgot to put "central gear leg" into your Damage Mechanics webpage. It should be "Lethal damage > Critical damage to the central gear leg > Active Critical damage > Serious damage > Normal damage"
When Realistic Track Physix? The forces which on track absorbing during the moving tracks, even while turning to a direction. I made Even a Suggestion with lots of Likes. https://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/283796-tank-turning-movement-of-tracks-sound/#comment-5536630 . Please Gaijin! :)
I'm glad this was posted on the launcher news feed. Tbh seeing a lot of people having.... words, to put it mildly, about "broken" damage models should take a look at this. Glad to see the article!
So, in Arcade Air battles... I score Critical Damage, receive the notification, and the target plane dies within 90 seconds... as there can only be one crit scored on that plane, and I got the notice for it, then I must be the one that killed it, according to this article. So why aren't I being credited with those kills?
What about ground HE rounds? Are spalling and concussion modelled? (The main reason SU-152 proved so effective against ferdinands is that the concussion of nonpenetrating rounds was enough to kill the entire crew, an effect i have not been noticing)
can wait to see this updated for boats.
Very good article to read... But then, we miss a lot of data on our stat cards... I really do think we should at least know the CEP for each gun... for a start :-)
Thank you. Those things are always useful!
