We’re continuing to improve our current vehicle models. Today we’ll tell you about some upgrades to the legendary Spitfire F Mk.IX.
The War Thunder studio doesn’t just work on new vehicle models, but also constantly improves already existing vehicles. Today we’ll tell you about an upgrade to the iconic early editions of the Spitfire F Mk.IX fighter. We have brought the fighter into line with real-life samples, and also fully reworked its 3D model – it now has 3.5 times more polygons! But first things first.
The legendary Spitfire F Mk.IX is a long-time resident in War Thunder. But time marches on and our requirements for models become more demanding. We regularly inform you about our work on improving the visuals of our vehicles; this is a significant part of the work of our large team of modelers and artists working on War Thunder. Today we present to you the updated Spitfire F Mk.IX!
This is an entirely new model, or more precisely two models (more about this below). The Spitfire, a favourite amongst players, has noticeably improved – the updated version has almost 3.5 times more polygons than before: more than 68,000 versus the old 19,500. Apart from the increased number of polygons, we’ve also fine-tuned several parts of the aircraft, for example the design of its bomb racks.
There should always be more of a good plane to love, so we decided to add the rarer Spitfire F Mk.IX(b) model to the already existing Spitfire F Mk.IX with its C-type wing. The only difference between them is that the B-type wing has guns that use a drum ammunition feed, providing the guns with 60 shells per barrel rather than the 120 provided by the C-type wing (visually, this difference will be shown in the additional fairings of the drums and the altered fume extractors of the guns. The location of the machine guns on the wing will also change).
On the other hand, the Spitfire F Mk.IX(b) will be equipped with the slightly more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 63 engine. This will most likely be either a premium or event vehicle. The machine gun armament will remain identical for both models of the Spitfire F Mk.IX – four Browning rifle-calibre machine guns. The Spitfire F Mk.IX(c) and Spitfire F Mk.IX(b) will be introduced in the next large update to come to War Thunder.

In a soon-to-come Developer Diary, we’ll tell you about our work on another version of the Mk.IX – the Spitfire LF Mk.IX.
Keep an eye on our news! See you soon!

I am excited for this, my only concern is that it replaces the existing model. Will unlocked skins move to the new model? Also, Ace pilot progress on the plane (I am like 85% complete on ace progress, would hate to lose that!)
Looks nice
Oh cool! New polygons to defeat the axis forces. Another premium Spitfire would add to the collection, however a new tech tree aircraft like Spiteful or Seafang would be universally appealing
Amazing! Please update TBF/Avenger since it is one of the most useful attacker-bomber plane in GF, especially for England as they dont really have any other choice.
"The second spitfire is the first premium aircraft of the Italian tech tree"...then i woke up and realized it was just a dream...)
I want this now!!!! especially the LF.MK IXb! btw there were LF.Mk IXb's with the B wing built. MH434 (still going strong today) is a LF.Mk IXb and has the B Wing (I hate to tell u this skinners but a MH434 skin will be needed pretty sharpish lol :D )
No, it doesn't have actually. The MH434 is a mk IXB which means LF mk IX with C wings. The B was the unofficial name of the LF mkIX.
Will the USA spitfire be updated as well?
I am still waiting for the N1K BR to be fixed. (maybe this week?) THEN and only THEN, can we address the real big problem in War thunder. (Tier 5 Tanks research points tanking WAY too long. Like this message LOOONNGG) Also... Gaijin did a wonderful thing, and they lessened the RP needed in many Jets and top Tier planes. Good job!!! So they took one big step forward. Tu4 and N1K Battle Ratings can be fixed easy. Until its fixed - every message ever, should be about the Tier 5 vehicle grind!!!
I made a post in the Forum highlighting the differences in the wings and radiator of the F IX. The radiator is not yet in default! The first IX (61 and 63) had a fuselage and wings identical to the Mk. Vs (the standard, not the tropical). The later build Mk IXs, particularly those with the Merlin 66 or 70, got a new radiator and the pointed style rudder to deal with the torque from the extra horsepower these engines delivered.
Do you mean this new model (61) is still wrong?
BackToTheGround, I'm not sure. The details of the Spitfire IX vary widely. He received gradual improvements in the production. So, some spitfires received all upgrades, others not. To see the early spitfires IX models search for "spitfire IX 1943". Some have this radiator, the others have a smaller radiator. This work of accuracy is extremely difficult because many Spitfires received updates after the war. They were taken back factories to upgrade wings and radiator.
Why is adding more polygons good? Visually the plane was already nice, so really all this does is make older computers slower. Maybe you ought to consider finding ways to use the SAME number of polygons, but improve how they model the shape wanted. Condottiero, I am SO with you on wondering when we'll see more Italian birds or promised independent tech tree. Finally, instead of adding yet ANOTHER minor mod of existing planes, maybe you should consider getting ships finalized and released?
