Kurt Knispel was a German tank ace. His record lists 168 confirmed tank kills, but when unconfirmed victories are included, the total adds up to 195. Even at 168 confirmed, this makes Knispel the most successful tank ace of World War II.

Ferdinand Porsche, born 139 years ago, was a German pioneer of automobile engineering and founder the Porsche company. In mid 1943, Porsche’s design for a heavy tank destroyer based on his previous but unsuccessful concept for Germany’s Tiger tank was delivered to the Wehrmacht, called Panzerjäger Tiger (P) ‘Ferdinand’ in his honor.

Artem Mikoyan was born in Armenia on the 5th of August 1905. He would later become one of the most celebrated Soviet aircraft designers together with his colleague, Mikhail Gurevich. MiG, the company prefix associated with many Soviet jet fighters, comes from the surnames of these two engineers.

Fall Blau, or Case Blue, the German summer offensive between June 28th and November 24th 1942, was intended to fulfill the invasion goals of the previous year in the Soviet Union. The operation’s aim was to take both the oilfields of Baku and the city of Stalingrad with it’s industrial center and transpor­ta­tion hub intact.

On July 14th 1916, during the First World War, four Grigorovich M-5 hydroplanes based on the “Orlitsa” seaplane carrier of the Russian Baltic Fleet, engaged four German aircraft and achieved victory. That day is considered as the birth day of the Russian Navy Air Force.
