The idea of a big gun strapped to some kind of a moving platform is almost as old as the idea of artillery itself. In the beginning, guns were moved by horses, and eventually by powerful engines: numerous countries involved in World War 2 relied on special gun tractors to do the job. After sustaining heavy losses, though, the Wehrmacht was forced to rethink their approach to artillery.
