Desmond Doss was a conscientious objector during World War II but still enlisted as a medic. Other soldiers initially despised him, but that quickly changed after he saved their lives during the battle for Guam. In Okinawa he single-handedly carried 50 to 100 wounded men from the battlefield. His deeds earned him the Medal of Honor and were immortalized in the 2016 Mel Gibson movie Hacksaw Ridge.

July 1st — July 4th
Operation Seydlitz

During the Battle of Rzhev a part of Soviet forces advanced into the territory controlled by the Wehrmacht. The German command decided to cut off their supplies and clear them out, and began encirclement on July 2nd, 1942. It was successful: out of 60 thousand Soviet troops only 1500 managed to escape.

July 5th — July 8th
Operation Citadel

On July 5th, 1943 German forces began their unsuccessful counteroffensive as a part of the Battle of Kursk. The Wehrmacht command hoped to utilize the element of surprise and quickly encircle the Soviet forces, but they were ready for a possible offensive and pushed it back.

July 9th — July 12th
Allied invasion of Sicily

After their victory in Africa, the Allies moved to Sicily that later became a foothold for the attack on mainland Italy. On July 9th, 1943 the biggest landing operation at the time began: soon Sicily was taken, and Allies gained valuable experience that they later used in Normandy. In Italy these events led to the ousting of Benito Mussolini and the beginning of negotiations of surrender.

July 12th — July 15th
Battle of Soltsy

On July 14th, 1941 the Red Army led a counter strike against the invading German forces under Soltsy in Northwest Russia. It was one of the first successful counter attacks of the USSR after the start of the invasion: it pushed the enemy back 40 km and allowed Leningrad more time to prepare its defenses.

July 16th — July 19th
Beginning of the Battle of Stalingrad

On July 17th, 1942 the most important battle in the Eastern Front began: the Wehrmacht’s 6th Army led by General Paulus marched on Stalingrad. Germany planned to quickly take the city and move south to secure valuable oil at Baku, but the Red Army was ordered not to surrender Stalingrad at any cost. Controlling the city became a matter of prestige for both countries, and the battle lasted for over half a year.

July 20th — July 23rd
Battle of Guam (1944)

The USA lost control over Guam in 1941, when Japan first invaded, and on July 21st, 1944 began an operation to retake it. Despite being more numerous, the American forces suffered from heavy rains, dense jungles, and desperate resistance from the Japanese who fought until the end.

July 24th — July 27th
Operation Mersad

The final operation of the Iran-Iraq War. During the peace talks, on July 26th, 1988, Iraq-backed Mojahedin-e-Khalq Organization invaded Iran, hoping to march to its capital, sparking uprisings against Ayatollah Khomeini on the way. It depended on the support of the Iraqi Air Force, which backed out at the last moment, allowing Iran to easily destroy the MEK forces from the air.

July 28th— July 31st
Operation Bluecoat

On July 30th, 1944 the Allied forces in Normandy began an operation to capture a road junction in the town of Vire, using the fact that the German forces withdrew from the area to regroup before their counteroffensive. The success of this operation left the Wehrmacht without additional forces for their counterattack and allowed the Allies to later surround a significant group of enemies in the Falaise pocket.
