In the next major update coming to War Thunder, the Japanese ground forces tree will see several highly anticipated new additions and changes being implemented. In today’s devblog, we will showcase some of the most notable changes coming with the upcoming major update - let’s have a look!
New Variants of the Type 74
Coming as part of the next major update “Direct hit”, seasoned tankers may rejoice as new variants of the popular Type 74 make its way to the top ranks of the Japanese ground forces tree. Specifically, the current Type 74 in the game will be updated to the Type 74 E, while the earlier modification - the Type 74 C - will be introduced to reinforce the Japanese high tier lineup. As a result, the combat endurance of Japanese tank commanders should increase as they get the chance to bring more vehicles into battle!
Additionally, we also plan to update the ammunition selection of the Type 74 series, including that of the STB-1 prototype. While the Type 74 E will retain most of its current ammunition selection, it will lose access to HESH rounds. The STB-1 on the other hand will retain its subcaliber and HESH rounds, but will lose the option of carrying HEAT rounds. Lastly, the new Type 74 C will form a middle ground between the two existing modifications: it will carry the same ammunition as the STB-1 but will also have access to a more powerful HEATFS round which tankers will be able to unlock as they gain experience using the vehicle.
Reinforced SPAAG Line: Welcome the M16 & M19
Apart from new additions to the top ranks, we also plan to introduce two new vehicles to the low and mid ranks of the Japanese ground forces tree, specifically its SPAAG branch. Already familiar to American tankers in particular, their Japanese colleagues will now also receive access to the well-known and no less deadly M16 and M19 SPAAGs. These will bolster the strength of the Japanese SPAAG line at ranks II and III, respectively.
With these two new additions we strive to make the progression through the ranks of the Japanese SPAAG branch smoother while at the same time offering tankers more adequate levels of anti-air protection at each rank. Beware pilots, the Japanese mobile air defences just got stronger!
Additional Camouflage for high-rank Vehicles
Last but not least, fans of Japanese ground forces will have one more new addition to look forward to in the next major War Thunder update. Namely, we plan to introduce an updated default single-tone camouflage, as well as two-tone patterns to all JSDF vehicles, thus giving tankers the option to outfit their favorite Japanese high-rank vehicles with a fresh coat of paint! Quite neat, isn’t it?
These and many more new additions and improvements await you in the upcoming major update arriving soon to War Thunder. In the meantime, make sure to stay tuned to the news to find out what other exciting new content the next major update has in store for you. Until then, happy hunting tankers!

Thank God Japanese Camouflages Are Being Fixed, It Really Bugged Me Until This New Patch. Also A Nice Addition To See More SDF SPAAG, Just A Bummer Domestic SPAAG's Will Have To Wait If They Ever Come. Ki-To, Type 98, SUB-II, Type 61 SPAAG, ...
I love all of these changes. I am a big fan of how hard Gaijin works to keep the Japanese Tree viable. Before the angry Copy and Paste crowd gets going, what I mean is, a complete refinement of the camouflage schemes is a lot of stuff AND a bold move. Sure you are getting more Type 74 but they are working hard to make them historically different and functionally different in game. And the SPAAGs are all in the US tree only, so not too common. The point is, Japan has the most limited options for ground outside of Sweden and Gaijin is using all of it. I applaud this. Also, Smin and company, would love to see this kind of love with Italy. Meaning the camouflage changes of course.
Conte_Baracca, well said Conte.
Also, Why Exactly Is The Type 74 (C) Getting HEATFS? The FCS Outfitted On The C Couldn't Fire HEATFS, Only APDSFS And HESH...
Before People Correct Me, I Meant "Only" In-Case Of Best Rounds, It Can Fire APDS, Smoke And Such All Fine, HEATFS Was Just Something They Didn't Load In Early Type 74s.
Go ahead, fill in the bugreport and get rejected because shells are a balancing tool.
Anticipated? Copy-paste US SPAAs, another Type 74 with garbage rounds and STB-1 loses HEAT-FS. Who the heck was anticipating those kind of changes? I'm pretty sure Japanese players including me were hoping for the Type 10 now more than ever because the model was datamined apparently but we still didn't get it. Another letdown I must say. The only positive thing might be the camo changes for Japanese vehicles but can't say for sure because I didn't have the time to confirm this on Dev server.
anticipated AA, which is true tho, they didnt had good AA for that tier.
Nobal, And with the addition the m19 and m16 they still don't have good AA for those tiers...
did you guys fix the type 90's armor too?
You know they didn't
Did you leak them the specifications for the type 90?
Do you plan on introducing indigenous SPAA vehicles to Japan in the future?
But they already have??
I hope you give 4ej Kai more than new sparrows :(
maybe it'll be a transformer :D
and what other do you want?
By updating the ammuntion you mean shrinking, right? Also, the Type 74(C) didn't really fire HEAT-FS, it fired APFSDS, yet it's not getting one? Put the br of the (C) higher and give it the M735, otherwise it's the incorrect variant, and will become a copy paste STB while the STB looses a round. Also please read the forum posts, and keep both two tone camos in the game, don't remove the already existing ones because theyre both (new and old) ACCURATE!
"hey guys look what we added to the japanese tree that is so cool we're so generous we removed some rounds we added a completely inaccurate MBT we painted the tanks brown and we replaced an accurate camo with another one instead of keeping both!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Giving the american HEAT-FS to the Type 74 (C) is like giving the 9M133 kornet to the Maus.
Kwoh, They don't remove any camouflage except the default one which was gross and nobody liked it, bicolor and bicolor late have been corrected and swapped places.
Can you please move M16 to rank 3? BOFORS gun is extremely inefficient against aircraft, especially the fast one. This leaves players doing daily tasks and battle pass with US (and now Japanese) tree without good SPAA until BR 8.0. Moving M16 to rank 3 would solve the issue.
"Namely, we plan to introduce an updated default single-tone camouflage" Will there be an option to KEEP the original off blue color? I might be one of the only people who actually enjoys it, and would much prefer to not lose it!
me too
ME 3
we dont need another modern tank we want prototype or the blueprint tanks, since there are planty of such vehicles in the game and low-midtier is pritty empty
We do not plan to add any Blueprint tanks.
play WOT if you want vehicles which never existed
