At the end of 1940, the aircraft designer Nikolai Polikarpov came up with the initiative to create a fundamentally new combat aircraft for Soviet aviation - a fighter with heavy cannon armament, that could fulfill tasks typical for heavy fighters and attack aircraft, while possessing the flight characteristics of a light single-engine monoplane fighter. The military accepted Polikarpov's idea with interest, formulating tasks for the future aircraft, such as effective air combat, including the destruction of bombers, aerial destruction of tanks and armored vehicles, as well as escort missions. The assembly of the first prototype began in May of 1941, however, due to the rapid offensive from the enemy towards Moscow, production had to be evacuated to Novosibirsk, Siberia, where the test unit was completed.
ITP (M-1) (ITP is for “heavy cannon fighter”) was a monoplane fighter with a 1,650 hp M-107P engine, the armament of the aircraft consisted of a 37mm Sh-37 motor-mounted gun and a pair of 20mm ShVAK cannons. Flight tests began in February 1942, but were not fully completed due to engine problems. A little later, versions with the M-107A and the AM-37 engines were tested, on the second prototype, the 37mm cannon was replaced with another ShVAK cannon. Work on the ITP project was interrupted due to the untimely death of the Soviet "king of fighters" in 1944.
In War Thunder, Polikarpov's project will be one of the rewards for completing the tasks in the new Battle Pass season. The ITP (M-1) is an excellent mid-range fighter; it is especially good in mixed battles against armored vehicles, as well as in air battles for attacking and destroying heavy bombers. If you felt low on ammunition in the Yak-9T and lacked maneuverability in the TIS-MA, the new fighter is definitely for you! The powerful 37mm Sh-37 cannon with 50 rounds, reinforced by a pair of 20mm ShVAKs, tears through most medium tanks and self-propelled guns based on them, when attacking from the side or rear. Light tanks and armored vehicles can be effectively attacked from any angle. With impressive offensive armament, the aircraft features good flight performance - a speed of over 500 km/h near ground level and about 670 km/h at altitude, a decent climb rate and turn time. Among the advantages of the fighter, it is also worth mentioning the suspended armament of 2x100 kg or 4x50 kg bombs, and 8 RS-82 rockets.
The ITP (M-1) is a definitive ‘must have’ in the setup of Soviet vehicles at rank III in mixed battles. It is perfect for working from low and medium altitudes in aircraft RB and AB against both light ground targets and low flying bombers. Cool plane, but why is the F-5, an American fighter, being put in the Chinese tech tree? Orders from tencent?
If you read the Devblog on the F-5 you'd know. The F-5A was used by the US only as an advanced trainer in limited numbers. Taiwan bought the F-5A as a fighter. The US will eventually get the versions they used, like the F-5C and F-5E. But i guess 'cHiNa BaD' is easier than reading an entire devblog.
