The Merkava Mk.3D is a later modification of the well-known Israeli main battle tank, developed during the 1980s. Featuring improvements in all aspects, but most notably in firepower thanks to its new 120 mm smoothbore cannon, the Merkava Mk.3D will soon become available to War Thunder tankers in the upcoming crafting event!
Briefly: A further developed modification of the Israeli Merkava MBT, featuring substantial improvements in mobility, firepower and protection.
Merkava Mk.3D, main battle tank, USA, VII rank.
Pros
- New 120 mm smoothbore cannon
- Increased armor protection
- Improved mobility
Cons
- Still lower mobility than most other top MBTs
- Increased mass
Immediately after production of the Merkava Mk.2 began in 1983, Israeli engineers began working on the new Mk.3 version of the MBT. The Merkava Mk.3 introduced significant improvements over preceding variants in almost all aspects. Primarily however, the focus of the upgrades was centered around improving protection - by adding additional armor to the hull - as well as mounting the newly developed IMI MG251 120 mm smoothbore cannon, purpose-built for the new modification of the Merkava, in order to increase firepower.
Production of the Merkava Mk.3 began in the late 1980s, with the first vehicles reaching troops in December 1989. The Merkava Mk.3 remained in production until 2003 by which time around 650 vehicles were built. Thus, the Merkava Mk.3 belongs to the spearhead of Israel's armored units in the present day.
In War Thunder, the Merkava Mk.3D will join the ranks of high-tier American gift vehicles, arriving to the game as part of an upcoming crafting event “Strategist”. While at its core the Merkava Mk.3D remains the same as previous versions already familiar to some tankers, the new version of the tank received several upgrades to allow it to go toe to toe with some of the other top MBTs in War Thunder. Let’s take a closer look!
Starting off with one of the more noticeable improvements to the vehicle - firepower. Unlike the previous iterations of the vehicle, the Merkava Mk.3 introduces a domestic Isreali 120 mm smoothbore cannon, which shares many of its ballistic properties to the widespread Rh 120 and its modifications. This substantial improvement to the Merkava’s firepower will allow aspiring commanders of this vehicle to engage in longer range firefights as well as make it much more comfortable to battle other, more heavily armored, MBTs at the top ranks. Besides, Merkava has one of the most powerful kinetic rounds in the game!
Furthermore, the Merkava Mk.3D offers improved armor protection, most notably on its turret. This part of the vehicle now houses a composite add-on package which increases the Merkava’s resilience against chemical rounds in particular, but also slightly increases protection against kinetic rounds. At the same time, the tank’s hull armor also received slightly thicker armor in order to improve the protection of vital components, such as the engine. Laser warning system, several types of smoke grenades, and protected ammo penals are also worth mentioning!
Speaking of the engine, this part of the Merkava also saw some major improvements being made. Namely, the Merkava Mk.3D is equipped with the Continental AVDS-1790-9AR turbocharged diesel engine, generating a noticeable increase in power output of up to 1,200 horsepower. As a result, the additional horsepower not only makes up for the increase in weight over previous variants, but it also increases the vehicle’s top speed up to 60 km/h on paved roads.
All in all, the Merkava Mk.3D is not just a worthy addition to any tanker’s in-game collection, but it also represents a major leap in performance over previous iterations of the vehicle. Therefore, if you were a fan of the Merkavas before, then the Merkava Mk.3D is a must-have in your arsenal. On the other hand, if you previously believed the Merkava always lacked some more ‘umph’, then you may wish to consider obtaining the Merkava Mk.3D as it may well change your mind.
The Merkava Mk.3D is arriving in War Thunder as part of an upcoming crafting event. Further details on how tankers will be able to obtain the vehicle will be published soon, so stay tuned to the news. Until then, happy hunting tankers!

The most disappointing vehicle selections we have had in any event in years. Another Merkava, as if 2 weren't more than enough already as event vehicles, a copy-paste ship, a halftrack that should have been on the main tree. The BI is the only well-suited event vehicle in this. Also, stop feeding the US top tier event vehicles, they have more than all other nations combined at this point and got one for the last three events in a row with the AMBT, F11F and now Merkava. Other nations also exist
Did you just write a constructive criticism? Sorry bud your comment is getting deleted.
we need osorio tank on france tier! pls gaigin
See you guys in next year's crafting event for the Merkava Mk.4
the mk2 was a normal 10 tasks event. but these crafting events are a pain in the ass
Merkava Mk4. One of the reward for the coming winter event :D Or next summers Operation suffer event :D
"Babe, it's a crafting event, time for another Merkava." "Yes honey."
"Babe, it's a crafting event, time for Sabra" "Yes honey." when will sabra come to game?
"Babe, its a crafting event, time for something truly different, not a copy paste". "Yes honey". "I have the perfect thing, this time we will do the North American Bronco".
Yawn.
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
HaaaaAAAAAAAAA ANOTHER MERKAVAAAAAAAAAA
When are they adding the EuroMBT for France and Germany? They desperately need it.
Raiden_Black, The EuroMBT isnt even out of the concept phase. There is not such a thing existing, only plans like "Yeah, lets build something with a leopard hull and leclerc Turret"
Another top/high rank reward for US...... You do know there are other nations in this game. Other then US/GER/USSR. Like Japan, China, Italy, France and Sweden.
Everyone always forgets to mention the UK when they say "other nations exist" lol. (which is funny given that Iraly/France have had rank V event vehicles at least)
Smin has answered this for a different post. The summary is that the US/GER/Russia issue is due to them being played more than any other nations and the other nations need vehicles in their normal tree (so NOT event vehicles).
Your Merkava will make a fine addition to my collection
no
I'm Israeli so it is required by the universe that I get this and I'm definitely for its addition but I am completely against its addition right now
Bruh the vehicle selection is quite boring this time.
Yeah really, time for the annual Merkava, high-BR ship, and out-of-meta soviet plane.
Ah yes, a third Merkava. 4 event vehicles, all of them for the big 3 nations, meanwhile China still sits at 9.7, Japan has yet to receive a single event tank, Italy still has no top tier Jet, and Sweden only has 4 GE premiums, 2 of which are reserve. You know, I really don't mind the tank itself, but for the love of god, might aswell delete the other nations from events altogether.
Well said
Can we stop with the Merkavas? And how about stopping with US top tier event tanks in general? There are now more event vehicles in the US top rank than some nations have in their tech trees and premium trees combined. This is stupid.
