It takes weeks to build a ground vehicle. It takes years to train a professional. Vehicle crews and maintenance teams are the most valuable resource in any player’s slots. |
But the realities of the game dictate their own rules. Every day on the War Thunder battlefields, far more vehicles are destroyed than ever met their end in real war, and a vehicle that is very survivable in real life may fail to show its virtues so clearly when it comes under a hail of fire. This mostly concerns heated battles on the ground.
We strive to recreate historical reality wherever this doesn’t oppose simple logic and exciting gameplay, and the survivability of ground vehicles in battle is an important factor that directly influences how much fun people have in battles. But how do we adapt our vehicles for far more deadly battles than those that took place in real life, without touching the tanks’ carefully recreated characteristics? The answer is simple: crews! It is people that control tanks, and the tank is considered lost only after the majority of its crew are killed. We’ve been looking into various options that would allow you to enjoy the battle for longer without losing the sense of a true conflict. These options included medkits, which would allow you to return a member of your crew to life, but many of you considered this mechanic not entirely suitable for the realities of Simulator, Realistic and even Arcade battles in War Thunder. There was a literal downpour of suggestions for an alternative.
We’ve considered the most logical of your suggestions in developing this latest mechanism, and now we present a new mechanic – crew drafting.
Do things look bad? The tanker is already on the way!
In a large upcoming update, tankers in all modes will become acquainted with a new mechanic with which a tank still capable of contributing to the fight mechanically can prepare for the next skirmish with the enemy by replacing a knocked-out crew member with a reserve soldier.
How does this mechanic work?
Just as you requested, we’ve changed not only the crew member revival mechanism, but also introduced variety to how the mechanic works in different modes.
In Arcade mode, you can request a draft at any point on the map, and if there is only one tanker left in the tank, the draft is requested automatically and all you have to do is hope that the soldier arrives in time. It’s all quite simple, the only thing you have to consider is that the vehicle cannot move between your request for a crew member and the time the crew member arrives.
It’s a little more complicated in Realistic and Simulated modes. Here, you can only draft a tanker at a safe capture point that belongs to your team, and you can only draft a crew member manually. This is in contrast to Arcade mode, only a battle-capable vehicle with a minimum of two living crew members can draft a new crew member. It will also be impossible to move while the replacement is being fulfilled.
Crew drafting will become available after you research the ground vehicle modification of the same name. Each individual replacement tanker draft costs Silver Lions.
The tanker is ready to move whenever you request it.
We thank all players who helped by offering suggestions for the development of this new mechanic, and we hope that ground battles in all modes will become more fun because of it. Good luck!

is there any chance you will add an anti spawn killing mechanic? iv seen player's just go along the side avoiding every thing just to get behind there spawn and take out new spawns. it could be as simple as highlighting them as soon as they get in the spawn or put in bunker's that shoot them when in range.
I have to agree on that one, I'm kinda annoyed of those campers
Oh no... re-spading everything :(. So what tier upgrade are we talking about? Guessing it'll go under "protection" and since parts (tier1), FPE (tier2) and add-on armor (tier4) it only leaves tier3. That makes it hard to obtain since tier3 is the most expensive one. Also any hope of giving it to vehicles that are spaded already? Since this will be a big time sink and a pain to obtain.
Some modification of the same categories can go in the same tier, so I guess it will be with FPE or something like that
Elitedestroyer22, You're correct. I was just thinking they might not want to expand "protection" to 2nd line. But let's all hope they'll make it tier1 or tier2 upgrade. Since replacing crew member will be as essential as repairing or fire extinguishing AKA not to expensive and hot hard to obtain.
I'm really not sure if I like crew being replaced/healed/brought back from life etc. But as you guys seem to want it so badly, please don't make it too overpowered. Don't make it so you get a replacement in like 10 seconds, make it so you get the replacement in like 2+ minutes or so! Make the player be a little bit careful while waiting for a replacement crew member. If timer is really short it doesn't add anything to the gameplay, only more frustating people who whine about tanks being godlike.
1 min sounds reasonable
Abe_Le_Musketeer, For arcade maybe, but in RB/sim two min really isn't that long.
Will we be able to choose what crew member we get? I would want my loader back more than a radio operator.
THANK YOU!!!! Good job listening to the community now could you do this with more things like the Tu-4 otherwise known as the cancer 4 to your players it would really help you with making money and bringing players back. If you don't this game is going to keep losing players like me that used to play a lot and now play other games your choice listen and act or let your game die.
This is for TANK modes, not AIR modes. Unless, you are implying that you end up with only 1 crew after a Tu-4 bombs you, which would be unlikely.
What skill level will the reserve have ?
should be novice/stock crew member.
Abe_Le_Musketeer, I think it would be more balanced if the crew member had 25% of whomever the crew member has been selected to replace's skill level. If I have a level 100 or so crew member, and he dies, it would be fair to have a level 25 player, etc etc.
Great idea, sounds like a good compromise between keeping people in game and allowing people to get kills. I'm glad to hear that it will only be available at bases outside of arcade, and should help encourage people to more actively defend captured zones
My Dream came true, thank you Shia LeBouf and Gaijin
I absolutely want everything to be 100% as real as possible even if it messes with the game. Such as how can a IS-2 pen a Tiger II (P) or (H) at atleast 100m or farther when that has been proven impossible in real life with any shell from an IS-2. Also there have been numerous accounts of a tank with 1 crew member fighting. So I say bring back 1 crew fightablity.
When I mean "messes with the game" I mean if it takes a way the "balance" or "fun" of the game.
this is a MMO game, you have to make it fair. PS. IRL an IS-2 could pen the face of the tiger at 500 meters.
YES! Awesome addition :)
