The most recent shell type introduced to War Thunder was the Fin-Stabilized High Explosive Anti Tank shell, or HEAT-FS in short. Developed as an improvement to the standard HEAT grenade, this post-war shell is capable of penetrating even the strongest armour. Today, we'll have a look at the Do's and Don'ts of this equipment.
Already an expert at slinging HEAT-FS at your enemies in high-ranked battles? Tell us and your fellow players about your tips and tricks in combat!

Intresting
what is fin of a shell? Can anyone humor me in short?
Its a Heat shells tail......... It enables the delivery of fatal disease in a more accurate manner.
Imagine it a bit like the fin of an arrow. It stabilizes the projectile to reduce round rotation.
Anyone know why HEAT rounds seem to generate more shrapnel than APDS? My understanding may be wrong but I thought that the larger, heavier sabot would produce more due to greater momentum compared to the penetrating jet formed by a shaped charge and the HE in the HEAT round is detonating outside the tank so I would expect its effect on the shrapnel produced to be minimal.
It cause also a spalling effect when exploding on the armor
The APDS is only an arrow (that hits the enemy armor) so it doesn't create as much shrapnel. My opinion of course.
Well, I Hope Gaijin will fix Shell selecting without shooting to reload the shell u need, in the Next Update. its even suggested in Suggestion forum.
You know that you can select the first shell that is loaded, right?
but what about mid battle when you want/need a different shell?
Please, someone tell me a trick/tip for combatting a 1960's era HEAT round (400mm of pen) with my 1944 tank from the other side of the map?
Don't get hit. That's about the best you can do. I would also suggest taking less ammo into battle thus reducing the chance of being ammo racked.
One major caveat not mentioned in the video at all: HE, HEAT, and HEAT-FS shells all detonate at the slightest impact with an obstacle. Hopefully, that obstacle is the armor of the target. However, it can just as easily be a tree, fence, or other negligible obstacle that AP shells such as AP and APHE go right through without blinking.
They've actually been nerfed quite heavily. HEATFS used to be more powerful, travelling through the entire tank. It seems that they behave more realistically now, giving APDS it's shot at glory. Not to mention that HEATFS is stupidly expensive going at 1200SL per shot in the Leopard and M60.
"HEATFS used to be more powerful, travelling through the entire tank"it still does that
Not quite, the stream now gets properly absorbed by cannon breeches and such, whereas APDS just seems to punch through any module
Any chance for the HEAT-FS for the walker buldog?
does anyone know the reason for the disclusion of post war heat shell for top tier British tanks?
blame the british army Available ammunition L31 High Explosive Squash Head (HESH) L15 Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot-Tracer (APDS-T) (production discontinued) L20 Discarding Sabot-Training (DS-T) L23 Armour Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) L34 Smoke L32 Squash Head-Practice (SH-P) L35A1 canister shot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Ordnance_L11A5
