USS Nevada is the lead ship of her class of two battleships built for the U.S. Navy in the years prior to the outbreak of WWI. Featuring a plethora of naval innovations and setting a standard for coming U.S. battleships, captains in War Thunder will have the chance to take command of the iconic USS Nevada as it arrives in the game as part of the next major update!
Briefly: An innovative American dreadnought battleship design packing heavy firepower coupled with a highly effective armor scheme.
USS Nevada (BB-36), battleship, USA, Rank V
Features:
- Superior firepower
- Excellent anti-air protection
- Strong protection
- Low mobility
- Scout plane
Design work on what would become the Nevada-class battleships began in 1910 with the Navy seeking to reduce the complexity and eliminate some of the shortcomings of their previous dreadnought designs. Basing its design on the preceding New York-class, the Nevada-class was to incorporate a number of innovations. As a result, the ship would be armed with a novel triple turret design, feature oil-fired boilers and introduce the newly developed ‘all or nothing’ armor scheme. Construction of the first ship was approved in March 1911, with USS Nevada being laid down in November 1912 and launched nearly two years later in July 1914.
USS Nevada was officially commissioned into service in March 1916 as The Great War was raging in Europe, yet the ship only saw brief service during the very end of the conflict after the U.S. joined the conflict in 1917. In the interwar period, USS Nevada undertook goodwill cruises in the Pacific and underwent a large modernization in the late 1920s. The warship witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor and suffered severe damages from bomb and torpedo strikes while also downing a number of Japanese planes in the process.
After undergoing extensive repairs and a refit in 1942, USS Nevada rejoined the war effort and took part in the Aleutian campaign before supporting the Allied invasion force during D-Day in June 1944. Subsequently, the ship also took part in the Invasion of Southern France several months later before being transferred to the Pacific Theatre to join the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Immediately after the end of WWII, USS Nevada was used as a target vessel for both atomic bomb tests as well as conventional gunnery practice before sinking off Hawaii in July 1948.
In War Thunder, USS Nevada will be a new battleship arriving to the top rank of the American bluewater fleet as part of the next major update. Joining the U.S. Navy in her late war configuration, USS Nevada offers her aspiring captains not only extremely potent firepower and excellent protection, but also a highly effective anti-air arsenal - a feature which most other top capital American warships were missing up until now.
USS Nevada represents the first American battleship to be equipped with triple turrets, which seasoned captains in War Thunder may recognize from USS Arizona - the direct successor to USS Nevada. While not as heavily armed as the familiar USS Arizona, USS Nevada still features an impressive primary armament of ten 14’’ (356 mm) cannons, capable of posing a significant threat to even heavily protected hostile ships. Main armament aside however, USS Nevada manages to completely overshadow its successor when it comes to its secondary and anti-air weapons! Namely, the ship is outfitted with eight 5’’/38 cal twin turrets complemented by eight quadruple 40 mm Bofors cannons as well as up to 40 20 mm cannons in single turret configuration. Because of such a versatile arsenal, USS Nevada is a true floating fortress, capable of inflicting heavy damage both to enemy surface units as well as incoming aircraft.
Fun Fact: USS Nevada’s design was so innovative at the time that it set a new construction standard for all subsequent American battleships.
However, it’s not just firepower which makes USS Nevada such a formidable opponent. Being a battleship inherently results in the warship being equipped with some serious protection in order to be able to withstand tremendous damage during intense gunnery duels. So let’s take a look at her armor scheme, shall we? Being the first American warship to adopt the so-called ‘all or nothing’ armor layout means that USS Nevada features extremely thick armor plating around her most vital components, such as her machinery, magazines and command centers, while the remaining sections feature virtually no protection at all. As a result, USS Nevada boasts an up to 13.5’’ (343 mm) thick armored belt while her turrets are protected by up to 18’’ (457 mm) of armor. As a result of its heavy protection and firepower, USS Nevada will become a true brawler in naval battles.
On the other hand though, USS Nevada’s excellent characteristics also come at the cost of heavily impacting the ship’s displacement. This means that the warship can’t boast about excellent mobility, being only able to attain a top speed of slightly over 20 kts (37 km/h), thus leading to cumbersome maneuvering during combat.
USS Nevada has set course for War Thunder naval battles and is due to dock in player ports with the release of the next major update. In the meantime, keep your binoculars at hand and keep scanning the news section as we continue to release new info on the upcoming update. Until then, calm seas, captains!

Comments will be premoderatedSo uhm... why does America get so many ships? Japan and Italy are still lacking in many ways when it comes to lineups and variety. Eventhough there are so many different ships they could get.
Japan has currently 21 ships in Bluewater regular tt, US 24. Not bad...
What do you mean? America is severely lacking in terms of Battleships compared to Germany, UK, Japan or even Russia…
How about an italian battleship? the american TT has already many battleships while the italian TT has only two of them..... Modernized Duilio when?
Italian tree particularly suffers from ending at just the BR 6.3... a LOT of space to fill in there, up to 7.0 (and possibly higher? Though then we step into the cold war jets for air support, which is just silly without anti-air missiles)
"many battleships" *has two mediocre dreadnoughts*
When we'll see the first italian battleships armed with 320mm guns?
boat
I mean, I guess it's alright considering the state of US battleships. Still though, where French navy/Takao/Myoko? I'm gonna spam those comments like Dozer spammed Mirage you know?
Oh boi, what to do, what to do?
So far the SdKfz 222 is the only interesting vehicle coming...
Glad we manage to hit your sublime taste with "little tank" :)
OH MY GOD! A WW2 refit American Battleship!? One of my favourite dev blogs so far!!! I had been looking forward to this… LOVELY!
Should have been Tennessee...
Where is Bismarck and French navy?
Yes yes. That's fine and all. But when will you introduce the modernizated Conte di Cavour battleship (1940) with the 320mm in triple and twin turrets, or just another italian battleship? (modificato) [13:32]
