On a dark day in 1931, a solitary steam train came to a halt at Saga City Railway station, Japan. An angry, resentful teenaged boy, still bearing the bruises of recent fights, was one of the passengers to disembark. Having failed at his studies and brought shame upon himself with his fighting, Saburo Sakai had been sent back home in disgrace. As he paused to summon up the strength to complete his journey home, his eyes fell on a poster at the railway station. The colourful advertisement was calling for recruits for the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The purpose of this article is to shed some light on the sometimes confusing subject of military aircraft organisation during the Second World War. Unfortunately, not only did each service within each nation have different ideas about how to organise aviation units; these organisations also varied immensely with differing aircraft types and roles, and at different time periods throughout the war. So, to get things started, we will look at a Swordfish squadron in the British Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm at the outbreak of World War II.

On August 13th, 1940 The first Phase of what was to become the Battle of Britain was launched over the skies of England. This plan known as Operation Eagle has come to be known as Eagle Day. When  approximately 2/3rds of the German Bomber and half of it's Fighters launched across the English Channel.

12th of August is a day of Russian Air Force.
