The Messerschmitt Me 163 ‘Komet’ (English: Comet) was originally designed by Dr Alexander Lippsich, and was the result of a long line of experiments of tailless airplanes and gliders. Under the employment of Messerchmitt in 1939, he created the first working prototype, utilising a rocket engine in place of regular piston engines. However, it was not until 1941 that the Me 163 as we know it now emerged.

The American held island of Guam was taken by the Japanese only days after the attack on Pearl Harbour. This was mainly possible due to the fact it was not heavily fortified.  Being the largest of the Mariana Islands, Guam was held by the United States from 1898. Due to its strategic importance in the Pacific theatre it was only a matter of time before the United States would attempt to take it back.

In early 1942 the Soviet supply situation was dire; especially in the besieged city of Leningrad. After almost a year of hard fighting, many units had almost no tanks remaining. The 107th Separate Tank Battalion was but one example of many. The Battalion, like so many other units, remained at the front fighting desperately to try to lift the siege of Leningrad. The men were available, but the issue was a shortage of tanks at the front. More tanks were desperately needed and one particular Senior Sergeant had an idea on how to get his crew into a tank..
