The BTR-80 armored personnel carrier is one of the iconic vehicles originating from the Soviet army. Meet the workhorse of the Russian motorized infantry in the incoming La Royale update!
BTR-80A, light tank, USSR, rank IV
Features:
- 30mm auto-cannon
- High max speed
- Amphibious
- Huge profile
- Poor armor
The BTR-80 armored personnel carrier was developed with experience from using the previous vehicles of the series, BTR-60 and BTR-70, in peacetime and combat operations of the Afghan war. The vehicle received a new 260 hp engine, reinforced armor, improved fire ports for the small arms of the troops inside, as well as other improvements. The main gun of the BTR-80 remained a heavy machine gun, however, due to the low efficiency of machine gun fire against modern lightly armored targets, an improved version of the vehicle with a 30mm 2A72 autocannon appeared in 1993, designated as BTR-80A. Vehicles of the BTR-80 family took part in all major armed conflicts in the territory of the former USSR and a number of other countries. Despite the commissioning of more advanced APCs, the BTR-80A is still in service with the Russian Army to this day.
The BTR-80A comes to the game as a new Soviet mid-rank light tank. The iconic profile of the APC will appear in the hangars of Soviet tankers with the La Royale update!
The BTR-80A armored personnel carrier was designed for delivering troops to the combat area and providing them with fire support, including against lightly armored vehicles. The vehicle is armed with a 30mm 2A72 automatic cannon and armor-piercing shells with a maximum penetration of about 60mm. The gun has a good rate of fire, heats up slowly and is fed by belts.
The 8x8 design allows the BTR-80A to perform well even on soft terrain. On paved roads the BTR-80A can reach speeds of up to 87 km/h.
The cons of this APC are its size and poor protection. The long hull and high profile make the BTR-80A visible from afar and hard to hide - and hiding is vital for this vehicle, since its armor can only protect against shrapnel and light machine guns. Any .50 machine-gun with armor-piercing bullets would pierce this giant quite easily.
However, the charisma of the legendary BTR-80A is much stronger than its shortcomings! In the La Royale update, we invite you to test the BTR-80A, as well as dozens of other new vehicles, in which you will be able to see new locations, new game features and improvements to your favorite game!

Comments will be premoderatedCan't wait for my 1940's tank to be lolpen'd by this monstrosity from 1993. It is basically a ratel 20 (Minus the missiles) sitting at a nonsensical BR. Please do some playtesting and up this thing to 7.3+ before release, where it belongs.
Ah yes, the vehicle with less pen than a t-34 at 7.3. The Ratel has similar pen but with ATGMs at 6.7. I can see this at 6.0-6.3 comfortably, but not much higher. Remember, vehicle anachronisms have been in game for a long time (R3 for one)
The only reason the Ratel 20 is at 6.7 is because it has the missles. The BTR has nothing besides its mobility and its auto cannon, which is on par with the 5.3 Japanese Sub I-II's gun, nearly identical penetration, unstabilised and easier to kill. Its somewhat fine where it is right now, but we'll definitely need to see what happens.
PLEASE! For the love of god! DONT! This is a modern vehicle created in 1994, equipped with the very same autocannon that you can find on BMP-3 and BMD-4 vehicles, that we currently have in game. Give it proper APFSDS belt and move it to correct BR of 8.3-8.7 where it belongs. We already have a VBC and Type 87 RCV on these BR and they perform great there. On 5.7 this vehicle will face 1943 vehicles like Panthers and M4A3E8. It wont be fun to play it there and it wont be fun to fight against...
Only the BMP2M has that monster of an ammo belt. This would be better fitting in 7.0-7.7
you realize it has a max penetration of 65 mms right? there honestly isnt much that thing can pen frontally or even from the side in most cases
Honestly, i feel like this should get APDS/APFSDS and go to like 7.7-8.7 instead of sitting at 5.7 without them. This thing will be more usefull against other IFV/AFVs than against things on its current 5.7 BR without APDS/APFSDS
7.7 or 8.0 with APDS would be perfect.
agree. I’m just surprised why they decided to give this BTR, and not with a stabilizer and a thermals. and if you give at least an APDS, then it would meet the expectations of the players, at 7.3 BR. like BMP 1
I hope it gets better belts.
If it does, it should definitely receive a BR increase, but considering APDS is the only other belt it can get that's not APFSDS, that's an easy 7.7 to 8.3 vehicle.
Pls give it apds and put it 7.7 or 8.0, same with the japanese car please
Nice to finally see the BTRs but i would add APDS and move it to 7.3 as 65mm pen at 5.7 is not enough
i dont know but 7.3 is to much it should be better on 6.3
You need to give it APDS belt and put it at 7.3-7.7 PLEASE, please don't ruin middle tier with 1980s vehicles. Same goes for Type 87p and R3T20
Agreed! Gaijin should implement a gap between 1940-1950 vehicles and modern stuff like Leopards and other Cold war era AFVs. Making a dedicated BR bracket for lightly armored MODERN vehicles (Leopard 1, AMX-30, PT-76) would make a perfect place to put this into. Making it deliberately worse than what it is IRL is not a solution. Make the vehicle shine in all its glory on proper BR!
Lol the audacity
No thanks.
Awesome vehicle. Very happy to see and honestly great work on the design, however it needs 3UBR8 APDS rounds and moved to tank 7.0-7.7 because it has no business fighting WWII vehicles.
