The Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile and artillery system capable of tracking and killing several air targets comes as a new top-tier SPAAG for the Soviets.
96K6 Pantsir-S1, SPAAG, USSR, rank VII
Features:
- Missiles and automatic cannons
- Able to attack up to 4 targets simultaneously
- Huge munition load
- Very high profile
- Poor protection
The 96K6 Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and artillery system, developed in the mid-1990s, was designed to protect strategically important areas, troops and long-range air defense systems. Due to the economic crisis in Russia, the development of the system was sluggish, but hot boosted in the late 90s, with new tactical requirements appearing for export of the system to the UAE. The modified Pantsir with a long-range radar also began to enter service with the Russian army, primarily in the air defense units. The version on the chassis of the KamAZ 8x8 truck appeared in 2006, and after successfully passing the tests, the Pantsir-S1 modification was put into trial operation, and in 2012 commissioned for service. At the moment, systems of the Pantsir family are in service with the Russian army and are constantly upgraded. The air defense system is intensively exported, the largest foreign operators of the Pantsir systems are Morocco, Syria, Algeria, Iraq and other countries.
The 96K6 Pantsir-S1 will appear in War Thunder with the release of the upcoming major update and will become the new top Soviet anti-aircraft vehicle. Being unique in its combat capabilities, the Pantsir combines a mid-range detection radar, 12 effective surface-to-air missiles and rapid-fire 30-mm cannons with HE and AP belts. The real “Sky Guardian” is reporting for service!
Not so long ago, the Tor-M1 air defense system was added to the game, which is capable of attacking two targets at once in a small sector. Pantsir-S1 (Russian for “carapace”) is capable of acquiring targets at distances up to 20 km, as well as simultaneously tracking and firing in the 45x45 degree sector up to four targets at the same time! Let's be honest, the scenario of the appearance of four air targets at once in one sight is unlikely for mixed battles in War Thunder, but if such a scenario comes true, you will be prepared! Jokes aside, a well-positioned Pantsir under ideal conditions alone is able to protect the team from, in general, all enemy aircraft approaching from airfields and at almost any altitude. If the pilot slips the launch and does not maneuver, he will meet with the Pantsir missile. The radar very quickly determines the distance to an air target, and missiles can also be guided by the half-lead method, which is handy against aircraft at extreme attack angles.
In addition to missiles, the system includes a pair of twin-barreled 30-mm cannons with an overall rate of fire of up to 5,000 rounds per minute and a huge ammo capacity. The cannons literally tear apart low-flying air targets and are able to hit light armored vehicles and even some tanks.
The Pantsir-S1 system is built on a KamAZ 8x8 army heavy truck chassis. The truck moves confidently on paved roads, but off-road causes problems due to the heavy weight of the Pantsir unit and a very long chassis. The vehicle has poor armor of up to 6 mm, and with the radar antenna unfolded, it becomes one of the tallest vehicles in War Thunder. Pantsir-S1 can be seen from afar and dies easily from any enemy fire including ordinary machine guns.
Pantsir-S1 is undoubtedly one of the most advanced anti-aircraft systems in the game. It will appear in War Thunder with the release of the Sky Guardians major update, which is almost completed by the dev team. The update is coming soon, and the new devblogs will come sooner!

Comments will be premoderatedI've never been particularly against a new addition because generally they actually make the game more playable, but this one aint it. SPAA, particularly russian SPAA has been a very difficult thing to fight against in any aircraft, but not impossible. This however has the ability to shoot down 4 aircraft within seconds of eachother at an 18km range... It's nearly impossible to fight back unless gaijin gives them really bad missiles that can be easily maneuvered against, but then it has 12 (1/2)
missiles that can be shot & tracked independently of each other, so if the first one doesn't connect, worry not because you have 3 more that are already on the way, why not one more to replace the one that just detonated? I don't really criticize the game very often, balance is hard to do in a game like this, but this will effectively kill off CAS in any jet or helicopter above 10.0 when it's already difficult as it is. One solution, Give jets a MAW or some sort of ECM for ground. (2/2)
Nice! Let's give the best CAS nation the best spaa, now only US needs one to.
Well this will be dirty for Squadron battles, I like it! ;) On a serious note though us Squadron battle players feel like we're being pushed aside, I know a lot of players from a lot of different squadrons that feel like the reward for playing SQB and becoming a top squadron does not feel worth it, I understand that this isn't the place to bring this up as we have brought this up on forums before but we hope a moderator or someone will give us players an answer on any plans for the near future.
Be a better version to be proud of
I love the addition of new vehicles, but this is way too powerful. Several countries have SPAA that are not even close to as powerful as the already existing 2S6 Tunguska, and now we need a new Russian bus that just beats every other SPAA in every possible area? This has to be nerfed on release, either the missiles or the radar, cause this is blatantly overpowered.
This thing is going to be an absolute beast.
