The Sd.Kfz.222 light reconnaissance armored vehicle was one of the most successful vehicles of this type in service with the German land army and saw intense use in combat during WWII.
Sd.Kfz.222, SPAAG, Germany/China, rank I
Features:
- High mobility
- 20mm autocannon
- Shoots both ground and aerial targets
- Light protection
The 4 wheel drive light armored car Leichter Panzerspähwagen (2 cm) Sd.Kfz. 222 went into mass production in Germany in 1935. The vehicle was designed to replace the previous modification Sd.Kfz. 221 and was built on the same Horch 801/EG I chassis. However, the Sd.Kfz. 222 was equipped with the 20mm KwK 30 autocannon instead, which was followed by the faster-firing KwK 38 on later series. The Sd.Kfz.222 armored car was actively used as part of the reconnaissance battalions of tank divisions during actions in Europe, mostly on paved roads. In 1938, Germany exported some of the vehicles to China, where the Sd.Kfz.222 was used against Japanese invasion.
In War Thunder, the Sd.Kfz.222 will become one of the initial vehicles in the German and Chinese tech trees. The main difference from its predecessor, Sd.Kfz. 221, lies in its magazine-fed 20 mm automatic cannon, the real game changer. The early Chinese version comes with a KwK30 cannon, while the German version wields KwK38 with higher fire rate and punchy sub-caliber AP rounds.
The automatic cannon, coupled with the vehicle's good mobility on hard ground and roads, completely re-energise gameplay. The vehicle is well suited for flanking breakthroughs and supporting allied tanks from the second line of attack. In urban battles against lightly armored targets, which are the majority at the initial ranks, a rapid-fire cannon with armor-piercing belt is always more effective than non-automatic guns of larger calibers. Another huge plus for Sd.Kfz. 222 is the ability to shoot down enemy aircraft, thanks to the high elevation angle of the gun.
The Sd.Kfz. 222’s light armor can be pierced by any heavy machine gun, especially in the area of the battle compartment. Although this is not the biggest problem at the initial ranks, you'd better remember that this armored car is one of the most vulnerable vehicles in the German lineup, yielding only to gun trucks.
In War Thunder the Sd.Kfz. 222 will arrive with the release of the next major update, among other vehicles, aircraft, features and new locations, which we cover in our Devblog series - so don't miss it!

Nice! I've been waiting for this to be added!
The German Sd.Kfz.222 with the later Kwk 38 2cm, should actually have the MG34 or even later some had MG42s. Instead of the MG13, which where replaced on German vehicles starting 1938.
The only 222 showcased in this devblog is an earlier variant for China, equipped with the KwK 30. We'll see what the German one looks like once the dev stream comes around or something.
MACGREGOR! WE HAVE TO FLANK THAT CAR AND TAKE CONTROL OF IT! IT'S OUR ONLY WAY OUT OF HERE!
I believe this "My Little Tank" from Herr Flick, from the Allo Allo series.
It was lieutenant Gruber vehicle of choice :)
Ahhh the Sd.Kfz. 222 that has been used in Call of Duty 2 whit the British campaign. And in Company of Heroes 2 a worthy scout Vehicle. Cant wait to go for it.
poggers
And do, it begins!!!
A German R3? Nice!
Almost. IIRC the gun and ammo's the same as the Panzer II so I doubt you can push it up as many BRs as the R3 can still be useable at.
The Sd.Kfz. 222’s light armor can be pierced by any heavy machine gun, especially in the area of the battle compartment................... How is 30 mm front considered "light armor"?
The Ausf. B had a 30mm front plate. This is probably the original with only 8mm, and given the shape and open top, HMG could probably wreck a B anyway.
Because light armour is intended for rifle caliber rounds?
