History

The creation of a self-propelled anti-tank gun for the needs of the airborne forces began in the USSR in the 70s. In 1985, the requirements for the future vehicle were specified - in particular, the main weapon of the vehicle was to be a 125-mm smoothbore gun, unified with the shells of the T-72 tank. Work on the creation of the Sprut (Russian for ‘big octopus’) dragged on for 20 long years, but in September 2005, the vehicle, created on the basis of the BMD-3 IFV, was put into service. After the bankruptcy of the initial manufacturer, the 2S25 project, together with the BMD-4 produced in the same place, passed to the Kurganmashzavod, where the machine was unified with the BMD-4M and under the designation 2S25M "Sprut-SDM1" exists only in the form of prototypes. In total, from 2005 to 2010, the Russian army purchased more than 30 units of the 2S25 self-propelled anti-tank gun.

The 2S25 Sprut-SD, a new top-tier light tank in the USSR/Russia armored vehicle research tree, will appear in the game with the release of the major update "Direct Hit" at Rank VII. This compact amphibious vehicle is the only "specialist" of its kind in the destruction of tanks in the service of airborne forces. Built on the chassis of the BMD series combat vehicles, this tank destroyer is armed with a 125 mm 2A75 smoothbore cannon, specially created for the 2S25 project.

The range of Sprut shells fully corresponds to the the T-72B tank: HE and HEATFS shells, two APFSDS nails with a penetration of more than 470mm, as well as 9M119 guided missiles. These ATGMs are well known to the commanders of Soviet tanks - launch through the barrel, high armor penetration, good speed and sufficient maneuverability. In general, the Sprut is able to crash any target that is in the crosshair of the sight.

And what about the survivability? No surprises here, alas. The armor of the 2S25 is light, made of aluminum alloy - the designers were significantly limited by the requirements for the maximum weight, because the Sprut-SD is an airborne delivered vehicle. The crew is only 3 people, and they are all located inside the fighting compartment quite close to each other and from the automatic loader. Finally, the ammunition of guided missiles is placed on shelves along the sides of the 2S25 manned compartment, which greatly reduces the chance of survival of the crew when any shell penetrates into the vehicle.

The maximum speed of the 2S25 is 70 km/h, in fact however, the vehicle accelerates to only 40-50 km/h on unpaved roads - not so much, even in comparison with the MBTs. However, the Sprut-SD has a reversible gearbox, that is, the reverse speed of the vehicle is equal to the forward speed - a very, very useful feature when shooting from behind cover. 2S25  can float - two water  jets allow you to move through the water at low speed.

Look for the new 2S25 Sprut-SD tank destroyer in the top of the line of light tanks of the USSR/Russia with the release of the War Thunder major update "Direct Hit" .
