The Polish Leopard 2PL main battle tank is a new squadron vehicle that will be available after the release of the “Ixwa Strike” update.
Leopard 2PL,MBT, Germany, rank VII
Pros
- Improved turret protection
- Thermal imager
- New HE round DM11
Cons
- Insufficient hull protection
The Leopard 2PL is an ongoing joint project for the modernization of the Leopard 2A4 tanks in service with the Polish army, currently being carried out by the German company Rheinmetall AG and the Polish state-owned Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa. The aim of the program is to improve the combat efficiency of the elderly Leopards to 3rd generation plus level main battle tanks.
The main areas of modernization are improving the tank's protection and firepower. The Leopard 2PL has additional modular turret armor (forehead and sides), enhanced protection of the gun mantlet. On the turret’s rear, massive boxes appeared, which under some circumstances can work as spaced armor for protection against HEAT shells. The L44 cannon remains the same, but the upgraded fire control system has modern thermal imaging equipment and is adapted for firing more powerful rounds. Since the power plant and chassis of the Leopard 2A4 remained unchanged, the additional protection of the hull had to be abandoned, as the weight of the tank approached 60 tons. In total, 128 Leopard 2A4’s in service are to be upgraded under the Leopard 2PL program.
In War Thunder, the Leopard 2PL will become a new squadron vehicle and will appear after release of the “Ixwa Strike” update. The add-on armor modules on the turret significantly improve the tank's resistance to hits from HE and to a lesser extent kinetic projectiles, and the upgraded fire-control system will allow the use of advanced rounds: the new to the game programmable high-explosive fragmentation DM11 projectile and the effective DM33 APFSDS shell.
The Leopard 2PL fire control system has all major features of modern main battle tanks: a high-quality stabilizer, night vision devices, a thermal imager and a laser rangefinder. Unfortunately, due to the high weight of the turret's armored modules, the hull armor of the Leopard 2PL remained unchanged from the 2A4 version, making it vulnerable to almost any hit in the hull, especially from sides.
The Leopard 2PL will be a squadron reward for battles after the release of the War Thunder update "Ixwa Strike". Follow our news for more details!

It's not as bad as it seems, there will be tons of less experienced players who will pick this thing up with no top tier lineup, die in it and leave the game, Germany will lose it's high winrate very quickly. People who already have a top tier lineup will either replace something like the 2A4 with this thing or won't bother with it entirely, there's not much of a point of going through a stock grind just for a minimal performance increase to tanks you already have. Once it comes out we will see.
On the bright side, Japan receives it's well overdue 10.7 MBT, oh wait...
While I do like that another polish vehicle gets added into the game, I am also turned off by it being in the German tree. Polish Tech tree when?
Delicious allied tiers. Cope and SEETHE. Germany uber alles.
I look forward to it some bright sunny day.
Insufficient hull protection the curse to all the Leopard tanks, more cannon fodder. Please add the F-101B and F-86D to the American tree.
If this thing will be at 10.0 then the normal Leo 2a4 should get DM33 or go down to 9.7 and the Leo 2k should get DM33 or go down to 9.0, since as it stands it's an absolute shitspunk that aspires to be everything that The Radkampfwagen is but fails miserably in every way. And the 2a4 gets lolpennned in the turret by 99% of things it faces, which was it's one redeeming quality.
It's 10.7 and the Leo 2A4 / Strv 121 should be 10.3.
oh look another leopard in the german tree.... whats next the leopard 2 A4M CAN? speaking of a canadian vehicle, can you tell the devs that since they want to keep piecemealing commonwealth tanks and planes all over the place they might as well just add the commonwealth as a nation... the community has a suggestion with a full ground and airforce tree
the newest tank in the game. real one came out 3 months ago. Looks like Poland get one of the most fresh designes and don't even have tech-tree. So why not ad th Abrams M1A2 SEP then?
now this game called reichthunder.
