SMS Von der Tann was a German WWI-era battlecruiser, developed in response to the British Invincible-class and considered as one of the most advanced warships of its time. Actively participating in numerous WWI naval operations, SMS Von der Tann has been readied for war once more as it prepares to join the fight in War Thunder naval battles with the release of the next major update!
Briefly: The first German battlecruiser-type warship built prior to WWI, featuring - unlike their British counterparts - heavier armor and smaller calibre, yet still powerful main guns!

With the appearance of HMS Invincible in 1906, the Imperial Navy found itself lacking an appropriate response as the British battlecruiser outmatched any comparable vessel in the German fleet at the time. As a result, German ship builders began working on designing an equivalent vessel in the same year under the name “Cruiser F”. As the ship would eventually become Germany’s first battlecruiser, its design was carefully considered, with emphasis being put on speed and protection.
By mid 1907, Cruiser F’s design had been finalized and its construction approved by the Kaiser in June, christening the vessel SMS Von der Tann in honor of a Bavarian general. Von der Tann was laid down in March 1908 and launched exactly a year later, before being completed and commissioned into service in September 1910. At the time of commissioning Von der Tann quickly became the new symbol of German naval power, being not only the first German warship fitted with steam turbine engines, but also the world’s fastest warship of its type at the time. After completing trials, Von der Tann was sent on a cruise to South America before returning to Germany in May 1911.
During WWI, Von der Tann participated in numerous naval operations in the war: including the Battle of Jutland in 1916, as well as participating in raids against British ports and engagements against the Russian Navy in the Baltic Sea. At the end of WWI in 1918, Von der Tann along with the remainder of the German Navy was interned at Scapa Flow. In the following year, the interned German fleet along with Von der Tann scuttled itself to prevent capture by the Allies with this event marking the end of the warship’s illustrious career.
In War Thunder, SMS Von der Tann will become the first battlecruiser to join the ranks of the German Navy, following the release of the next major update. Packing a hefty punch with its battleship calibre main guns while possessing good mobility and maintaining adequate protection at the same time, SMS Von der Tann gives captains who value versatility a solid alternative to the early German battleship designs.
SMS Von der Tann’s primary battery consists of the same 28 cm SK L/45 cannons as found on the battleship SMS Westfalen, already familiar to some captains. Unlike SMS Westfalen however, Von der Tann is only equipped with four twin mountings, totalling eight guns. While this may seem like a disadvantage at first glance, it’s worth noting that SMS Von der Tann can, unlike SMS Westfalen, bring all guns to bear on a broadside, effectively making the two ships’ broadside firepower equal.
Fun Fact: At the time of its construction, SMS Von der Tann was the fastest warship of its class in the world, capable of achieving up to 28,1 knots under favorable conditions. It is worth mentioning, that overall engine power of the battlecruiser was almost twice as high as British HMS Dreadnought’s.
Supporting the ship’s primary guns are SMS Von der Tann’s equally powerful secondary weapons. Beside the main guns, captains also have access to a total of ten 15 cm secondary guns as well as sixteen 8.8 cm tertiary guns to engage smaller surface targets at closer ranges. In addition, SMS Von der Tann also comes fitted with four 450 mm torpedo launchers, with one launcher facing in every direction.
Despite not being as heavily armored as a fully fledged battleship, SMS Von der Tann still features some pretty impressive protection. Namely, its vital components are shielded by a 250mm thick belt armor, while the main battery turrets and secondary battery casemates feature up to 230mm and 150mm of protection, respectively.
SMS Von der Tann was the first German warship to be equipped with steam turbine propulsion. As a result, and despite its heavy firepower and armor, the ship manages to reach an impressive top speed of close to 27 knots (50 km/h), thus resulting in substantially improved mobility when compared to any other German heavy-weight of the bluewater fleet.
The battlecruiser SMS Von der Tann will be docking at player ports with the release of the next major War Thunder update and will become the first ship of its type to join the ranks of the German navy in the game. Could we see the yak 25 and 28 in this update? After all, the La200 was the rejected design, and the yak 25 was chosen instead for main production

Battlecruisers and battleships needs to be increased to at least 6.7.. 5.0 and 5.3 as well as many 5.7 can't do anything whatsoever against them yet meet them in pretty much every game. It's just plain unplayable and boring, especially on maps where you can't even hide from them, just have to keep on praying that they'll miss. Also RP gain is so damn abysmal that 5.0+ takes weeks to grind a vehicle while in this painful situation, getting more and more bots per game even mid day... Get it fixed!
As if to further reinforce how utterly broken naval is I went for a morning game in my 5.3 and got a game of [Encounter] Norway, where there is a single heavy spawn in the open, with at least 3 battleships per team... The enemy team quickly got 2 of theirs behind cover where they just pummeled our team the whole game, another just sailed straight into our spawn and it wasn't until then 3 torpedoes managed to sink it. It even tanked 4x 1000kg bombs on front turret and midships. Utterly broken.
Usually play an hour in the morning - maybe more later, that game lasted almost 40 minutes and lost because an AI was stuck on a rock and refused to sink... Got 4475 rp *with* premium despite several kills, assists and playing the whole game long... Utterly abysmal RP gain... Currently researching Nürnberg 5.7 for 100k rp, which is identical to the 5.3 Leipzig and Köln just a bit more AA... It just can't kill the battleships at 6.0 and can barely fight the heavy cruisers at 5.7
May I ask if we shall see SMS Derfflinger or any of her sister ships who also fought at the battle of jutland, with 8 304mm guns in 4 turrets in the superfiring position, a top speed of 28 knots, coming in at 30,706 tonnes, with a belt armor line of 11.8 inches, and lastly classified as a battlecruiser?
