The SOMUA SM is a French experimental tank, developed in the immediate postwar years as an alternative to the AMX-50 being developed in parallel at the time. Despite it being the AMX which ultimately entered service, this won’t stop the SOMUA SM from joining the ranks of the French ground forces tree in the upcoming War Thunder update!
Briefly: The alternative design to the AMX-50, featuring heavier armor protection at the expense of mobility.
SOMUA SM, heavy tank, premium, France, IV rank.
Pros
- Excellent 100mm cannon
- Autoloading mechanism
- Good hull protection
- Premium bonuses
Cons
- Low armour protection for the turret
- High combat weight
- Average mobility
- Somua SM (Rank 4 France) - available after the next Major Update;
- 1000 Golden Eagles;
- Premium account for 7 days;
- Pre-order bonus: unique "Savate Boxer" decal;
- Pre-order bonus: unique "Savate Master" title.
In 1946, at the same time when AMX was given the order to develop what would eventually become the AMX-50 tank, SOMUA was instructed to come up with a competing design that would act as an alternative to the AMX.
Due to both companies being issued identical technical requirements by the French Army and taking much inspiration from the German “King Tiger” at the same time, both designs turned out to be very similar. In fact, SOMUA’s design stood out from AMX’s only in increased mass, coming as a result of heavier protection, and in its more simple running gear.
The SOMUA SM, as it became known, was presented for the first time to army officials in October 1951, albeit without its engine installed. At the same time, prototypes of the AMX-50 had already been tested. By 1953, SOMUA had completed the construction of its SM tank, subsequently conducting trials.
During testing however, several design issues were revealed. Because of this and the fact that the upgunned version of the AMX-50 with a 120mm gun was already available, the decision was made to cancel further work on the project. As a result, the SOMUA SM never left the prototype stage and the only constructed vehicle was scrapped shortly after the project’s cancellation.
In War Thunder, the SOMUA SM will be a new premium heavy tank awaiting commanders at rank IV of the French ground forces tree, following the release of the upcoming major update. Unlike its close relatives - the AMX-50 and Lorraine 40t - which share a similar general design, the SOMUA SM offers its future commanders a slower, but much more heavily armored platform, carrying the excellent French 100mm cannon.
As already mentioned, the SOMUA SM is fitted with the proven 100mm SA47 anti-tank cannon, present on a number of French machines at rank IV and therefore all too familiar to tankers. Furthermore, the SOMUA SM is also equipped with the same autoloading mechanism as found on the AMX-50, giving it an astonishing reload rate of just 4 seconds!
Some keen-eyed tankers may have already noticed an extreme resemblance in the SOMUA SM’s turret to that of the AMX-50. And indeed, your eyes are not playing tricks on you - the turret is similar in design and with the protection it offers to that of the AMX-50. On the other hand however, the hull of the SOMUA SM offers vastly better protection than that of the AMX-50, featuring a much thicker 150mm frontal plate, while the side and rear armor was also thickened.
Although the SOMUA SM offers improved protection while retaining identical levels of firepower as the AMX-50, these improvements do come at the cost of mobility SOMUA SM is fitted with the same 1,000 horsepower engine as the AMX-50, but its mass increased to 60 tons, the vehicle’s mobility decreased as a result. As such, the SOMUA SM can only reach a top speed of 40 km/h under ideal conditions, while its modest power-to-weight ratio of 16.6 hp/t will further limit its mobility in off road conditions.
The SOMUA SM will be obtainable through the purchase of a special bundle in our online store, arriving in the hangars of its prospective owners with the release of the next major update. In the meantime, make sure to stay tuned to the news in order not to miss out on the latest information concerning the next major update coming to the game. Until then, happy hunting tankers!

With the amount of "spit/slap in the face" comments going around, it feels like a concerted effort from a small number of people using alternate accounts to make it seem like a bigger thing than it is. So they made HEATFS the stock round on high tier... so what... get over it.
You obviously have never played top tier before you try to grind out 25k RP for a round that you were using the day before with a round that is completely ineffective against enemy tanks. This is the kind of attitude that lets Gaijin get away with this sort of stuff.
Just look at this guy stats. And y all will know how much this guy knows about game
are you going to release something mid or low tier that isn't a premium and actually fun to play for once? gaijin? equal high tier and low tier this patch? and few premiums? something added to your game thats fun to play. or primarily a actual fun gamemode? or actual well designed map for once? please.....
No it's warthunder, you are supposed to pay, get premium and not complai or you will be banned.
Premium tanks just aren't worth it. Since all tank modes expect you to spawn about 3 times average (yet don't pay you enough rewards to actually do so) the premium boost of this would only give about 33% of it's boost to the overall game. Thus premium tanks actually promote people to only spawn once in their premium tank and then leave, screwing over the rest of their team and most likely resulting in the game being a loss, thus annoying others plus not actually giving mush rewards from the loss
Then in addition to the rewards just being bad in general despite costing the equivalent of a AAA game, it will most likely just die to an unavoidable aircraft or helicopter, making the mage a total loss altogether. You'll also just be stuck with the empty feeling of having to play exactly the same vehicle over and over, not playing the vehicles you unlock with it. TL;DR - The economy and balance of ground battles is completely screwed up and premium tanks are just trash. I've got one.
game*
it's my favorite when the devblog has "premium bonuses" as a plus upfront
BR decompression for top tier Air RB is necessary. Your 'stats' cannot replace player experience in determining a bracket for supersonics without the good AAMs. Queue times will not be an issue if you claim that they will be since they're already relatively fast and people will actually want to play the less meta supersonics if they know that the matchmaker will be fair.
Reason they don't do it the proper way is because it would take more time and cost them money. And GJ never chooses the way that denies them a quick "buck"
Nice. Since this will be a Pack vehicle. I hope we get AMX-50 1950 in the tree. Its sad to see that AMX-50 1950 like so many other vehicles that are left to rust away in the files.
Well technicly the amx50 we got in the tree only apeard in the national day parade of 1951. Take any picture of the amx50 trial before or after it's the on you call 1950. The one with the lorraine 40t turret was never tested, it was just a spare hull and the indevellopment lorraine40t turret splaped together to show 2 tank during the parade.
I swear, most of you complain like you are on your period. The game is free. If you don't like the game, don't play it. Go play Super Mario or something else sophisticated. You act like everything in life is fair, or balanced. In that way this game is great, it is just as unbalanced.
So you admit the game is unfair and unbalanced and basically approve it, thks for telling us vladimir.
Am I seeing track physics in the video? It's something I've wanted to see for a long time (besides Thunderstreak, of course)!
1.101.. REALLY
The first number describes the version of the game and it's not because they've done about 50 updates that they have to release a new version. They will continue to increase the second number (the one representing the updates) until it changes version.
Not like France already lacks tanks and has a hard time with solid line-ups, just make the new tanks premium why not, right after making the high tier tank grind even worse..
Very true, do not support gaijin greed!
