My granddad was a fitter and turner in the RAAF during WWII. He was rebuilding battle damaged aircraft to send back to the Pacific theatre. He loved Beaufighters and told me a story of a time when he went for a test flight in one after it had been repaired. The lady next door to her fell to the ground screaming in shock. That's when she knew who it was. His war ended after he was burnt by hot engine oil from the Lancaster bomber G for George. Being under nether undoing an oil line just after it landed. A miscommunication meant that the oil lines were undone in the wrong order creating a vacuum that let go when he undid his oil lines. They changed the oil as soon as the plane landed. I can still see those burns 30 years after he passed away.
