Today we are pleased to present the Japanese answer to American Thunderbolts and Super Fortresses!
Meet the Ki-87 - The high altitude interceptor!
Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, it became clear that Japan would require machines that were capable of stopping US bombing raids. The army commissioned therefore, to create and produce a high-altitude fighter capable of intercepting enemy bombers before they hit Japanese controlled islands. This objective sought, was achieved in part, by creating a twin-engined Mitsubishi Ki-83 and Kawasaki Ki-102, both of which are well-known to War Thunder players. In competition with the above-mentioned projects, an aircraft created by Kunihiro Aoki from the Nakajima Aircraft Company was a single-engine fighter equipped with a super-turbocharger and a pressurized cabin.
It took over two years to create the prototype of the Ki-87. Engineers encountered a number of problems, one of the biggest of which was the use of the super-turbocharger. The first flight of the machine took place in April of 1945. Ultimately, the aircraft had to reach nearly 700 km/h, whilst being equipped with 4 cannons: 2x20mm and 2x30mm, so that a pilot would be able to intercept enemy aircraft operating at high altitude, specifically the American B-29 Superfortress. However, before the machine had reached its full efficiency in battle, the war between Japan and the United States of America was over.
One of the most characteristic elements of this aircraft is a large super-turbocharger mounted on the right side of the fuselage. Our graphic designers have tried to reproduce as accurately as possible, the module on which Japanese engineers spent so much of their valuable time to implement into the vehicle. Another distinguishing element is the aircraft's landing gear, prior to climbing beyond take off, it is rotated by 90 degrees, and only then retracts. Of course this element has also been recreated by us faithfully in the game.

In contrast to the A6M Zero, Ki fighters never belonged to the most agile, so any player who sits in a Ki-87 cockpit should focus primarily on attacks that use the height/altitude advantage. With 20 and 30 mm cannons, even a short, accurate burst is able to rip or tear an enemy fighter or bomber apart.
Ki-87, one of the latest aircraft created in Japan during the Second World War, it will be a great addition to the Premium branch of the Japanese Tech Tree. Soon it will take pride of place in the line-up of many players who like to fly under the flag of the Rising Sun!

ki-201 coming any time soon? It was partially built much like the R2Y2 Airframe.
would love to see the CDK updated so we can skin these new Japaense aircraft. it hasnt been updated since June.
Nice looking plane shame its behind a pay wall. This game is less and less free to play. I know they have to make money some where but it seems to be a trend now any interesting plane they put in is premium. Can you guys do something about increasing the player base in this game, Steam player figures have moved very little in 2 YEARS. Please don't tell me your figures at gaijin for people who don't use steam are showing growth unless you able to back it up with hard facts.
Thank god, I was waiting a very long time to see if this will be in the game. I need some more japs premiums, this is very acceptable as a premium. Should I give my hopes up on a leopard 1a1 or any other leopards?? Please Germany needs another top tier tank.
Check our website everyday, maybe we will have something for you :)
I don't think this aircraft, aside from better speed, climb, and alt, will be far superior than the rest of what Japan has in terms of bomber hunters. The Ki-84 Hei has the same armament which can still engage B-29s at range with the 30mm and the J7W1 with 4 30mm guns can catch a B-29 given that Japan will usually air spawn except on Iwo Jima. If this has more 30mm ammo than the latter planes and goes on sale, I wouldn't mind picking this plane up. When can we expect this plane to arrive?
Zsu-23-4 when?
If the Ki-87 is implemented correctly it should be able to turn with/climb with a Thunderbolt as they have practially the same wing loading and hp/weight ratio. It should be completely out-turned by Mustangs, Corsairs, Hellcats, etc. Let's see if they actually get this right.
At this point you should add the P-72 too. I mean, with 2 37mm cannons and max speed of 789 km/h, it would be a beautiful plane to use. Think about it Gaijin...
well ofc its premium... When we finaly get a plane that aint russian its premium... This is why players are leaving warthunder, and this is just one of the many problems like i dont know... HM? OH! censoring =_=
can you give japan a good top tier jet the sabre is ok but there should be more
