To provide heavy fire support for allied assaults on enemy outposts, the powerful 105mm howitzer was adopted on the M4A3. It could fire M1 shells at angles from -10 to +35 degrees at a maximum range of 11500m. Approximately 500 of these hard hitters were produced at the Chrysler factory in Detroit between May and September in 1944. The M4A3 (105mm) were deployed to European Theatres from July 1944, and played a much valued role in the overpowering and destruction of enemy positions.
