Through many instances in history, mankind has shown great bravery and commitment in its actions, especially in times of conflict. Notably, when faced with seemingly impossible odds, individuals have stepped up and inspired whole nations with their strength, cunning, and determination. Individuals such as the Gladiators of ancient Rome, who fought valiantly even when facing death almost every day.
On February 23rd, 1945, the Second World War was almost over in Europe, with troops from the USA, USSR, Great Britain and other Allied nations such as France, Poland and many others closing in on the German heartland. But in the Pacific theatre at that time, the end was yet to be at hand.
On the isolated island of Iwo Jima, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, troops from the Empire of Japan and the United States of America had already clashed for days in a fierce battle over the control of a strategically crucial island. Both sides fought unswervingly, but ultimately, the day belonged to the American soldiers climbing Mount Suribachi to raise the flag on Iwo Jima. The similarly named picture taken on that occasion became famous all over the world, and remains a symbol of bravery to this day; a bravery very similar to what characterizes the Gladiators of ancient times.
We would like to use this occasion to celebrate with you, our players, the bravery of men from all nations of the world. On February the 23rd in Russia, Belarus, and other former Soviet countries, people celebrate the Defender of the Fatherland Day in honour of those that have given everything to fight for their nation, very similar to how people in the US and other nations will, on this day, remember the rising of the flag on Iwo Jima.
Don't forget to become a Gladiator yourself by participating in our ‘Gladiator Glory!’ special, and get a chance to unlock two decals, as well as the hidden Gloster Gladiator in the British aircraft tree permanently for your account: the Gloster Gladiator Mk.IIS!
