Today we would like to tell you about the new effects of the influence of wind in the game environment of War Thunder - smoke, fire, sparks and dust.
The wind has already blown in locations of War Thunder, but before the release of the Winged Lions update, it could only be seen on the grass and on the waves. Now everything will be different! All particle effects, such as fires and smoke, dust from ground vehicles and aircraft engines, gun shots, explosions and sparks - all these effects will now be affected by the wind.
The wind in the game depends on the weather settings. The influence of wind effects is most noticeable during storms, but such weather is rare in War Thunder, and we are looking for a middle ground between a comfortable weather for playing and the beauty of the effects.
We are currently tweaking the weather settings to make the new wind effects more picturesque in the upcoming update. We will continue to make effects better in the following updates too, we have tons of ideas!

This should be a very interesting visual change! Should make smoke rounds look a lot more interesting, if you need to figure out the wind direction to make the spread of the smoke more effective. Do clouds move with the wind, and does wind affect aircraft as a physical element? Or is it just applied to visuals like smoke?
shots are included, so i guess planes will too.
foxmeup, pretty sure "shots" in this case refers to muzzle flash and smoke not projectiles.
Players: Hey gaijin, we want to be able to play competitively our rank 5 & 6 expensive premium helis in EC and not get rekt by hordes of Ka-50, we played heavy moolah for them too you know?!?!?!!!!? Gaijin: sMokE gOEs BRRRRRRRRRRRRR...
The people who would be working on smoke are part of a completely different team than anybody who would be working on Heli EC and balancing. Secondly, Heli players are such a small portion of the player base that I would rather they focus on other parts of the game.
Rokkerboyy, Yeah since the ka50 spam yeah, thtas why nobody plays it
yay even more calculation the already overcharged or underused servers will certainly struggle with. Interesting changes, but can quickly become one of the most hated features of the game.
no doubt, especially as holiday period and the heaviest use of the year begins...another great Gaijin decision - increase programming burdens at the same time as user burdens ramp up.
not to mention the DDoS crashing Gaijin can't seem to get a handle on.
And what if a destroyed vehicle on the ground emits smoke and you fly through the cloud of smoke in a jet? In the broadest sense, that is also wind, does this also affect the smoke?
I don't think jetwash or wake turbulence would affect anything at this stage, but that's something to hope for!
neat! it'd be cool if wind affected how planes flew and shells curved, but i'd imagine that would be both hard to code and essentially just be dumb random dispersion on your shots, of which I imagine would be more frustrating than immersive.
Can't wait to sacrifice more frames for grass sway ....
I believe wind already does have an effect on aircraft, just a minor one. You'll notice on some maps that your pane doesn't quite fly straight, but just slightly off to one side due to a crosswind (though this isn't very clear). This has been a feature for a very very long time. As far as its effect on ballistics... I'm not sure, though I'd imagine (since they exist as physics objects in the world as well) that they also get affected, though it's not very noticeable due to the small effect.
Wow great visual enhancement, but people will still abuse ULQ mode. Could you guys remove it from game mode that hide the enemy nameplate?
That would be pretty dumb, especially since I know people who have a hard time running war thunder on other graphic settings than ULQ.
ch3z, Yeah, just like me, since i play WT with an Intel i3 4th gen 1.70 ghz, 8gb ram, Intel integrated graphics and it just runs in ULQ, still frame dropping sometimes. "Buy a better PC dude" someone will say, not a so affordable option right now, therefore i will still play the game in ULQ for a while
Finally the Smoke from the Gun wont blow directly infront and stay that way, this is exactly the small quality of life improvments I would love to see more of.
plz gaijin only tank ground mod
I have seen many people requesting for this change. It isn't a good idea to have this mode as its own separate gamemode. Aircraft designed for CAS will become pretty useless in the game. Right now we need to focus on making CAS and SPAA more balanced rather than just scrapping them entirely.
Do us all a favour, instead of adding new content fix the damn servers
Really nice, hope to see such thing applied to smokes effect used for smoke shells and grenade and else, maybe a little indicator to know the winf direction could helps :)
