The Type 87 anti-aircraft gun entered into service in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces as a replacement for the hopelessly outdated American Duster SPAAG. The specification and concept for the new anti-aircraft vehicle was based on the German Gepard SPAAG that our players know so well. The vehicle used a modified Type 74 tank chassis and was equipped with the Oerlikon 35 mm twin cannon system as used in the Gepard. The vehicle was a success – more than 50 of these SPAAGs were put into production and several units remain in service today.
In War Thunder, the Type 87 SPAAG will take its place on rank V of the Japanese armoured vehicles research tree. In addition to fighting against aerial threats, the Type 87 can try its luck by attacking ground vehicles – for these purposes it’s preferable to research APCR ammo. You’d better not attack enemy tanks directly head-on, but the lightly armoured sides and rear of many top tanks are pretty much vulnerable to a heavy burst of 35 mm armour-piercing rounds.

Needless to say, the Type 87’s place is not at the tip of the spear – its light bulletproof armour makes it easy prey even for aircraft cannons, and it only has a three-man crew. But its decent mobility and speed, passed on from the Type 74, allow the Type 87 to quickly reach cover or attack opponents from the side – and a seasoned commander will make good use of this capability!
The Type 87 SPAAG will be added to the game in the upcoming major update – follow the news!

Amazing work! , The truth that have made me happy with this news, continue giving love to the Japanese forces !
war thunder but every time it gets updated the rank 5s are more futuristic
the type 87 was introduce in 1987. is that not a bit moderm to be added in warthunder? cause if we dont put the limite yet we will soon add the T-72, t-80 and m1 abraham
Leopard A1A1 is already 1975 and T64, T72 and T80 were already well in service by that time
F7UCutlass, and the M1 Abraham was in 1980
based off of... more like copy pasted on Japanese tank.
how many nation have a sherman? ho yes, they all do
CaID, although German Sherman is Really rare today
After reading several comments, I think this vehicle is being added to the game for several reasons, 1.- Japanese need a decent AAA for tier 5 and maintain some balance with respect to the rest of the nations. 2.- The type 87 is practically a gepard, is logical that will be implemented in the game with the same benefits as the gepard. 3.- It is true that this vehicle is from the 80's, but if it meets the same conditions of gepard, then the year of production should not be factor.
4.- Japanese ground forces are very limited, we can not compare the same number of projects or prototypes with Russia for example. Anyway. You can see this vehicle as a special case, just to keep the balance in the game and that players feel they have the same chances of winning as a Russian, British or any other nation, cheers!
Vota_piedra, Yeah but I can use its year of introduction to lobby getting my babies into the game :P
This going to have the same super crazy repair costs as other SPAA's in AB? I guess you don't want players to shoot down those precious suicide planes in AB to help protect the team ??
Yay.... More SPAAs to deal with in CB.... e_e *defeated sigh*
This thing was in service from 1987 to today. wait. 1987..... that means the cut off date doesn't matter.
Does that mean.......... composite armor. OMG T-72 ,M60A3 ,M1
The cutoff date was abandoned a LONG time ago. It's technology now. The Type 87 is admittedly pushing the boundary a bit as it MIGHT have composite armor irl, but as that info is classified it's impossible to know for sure - that being said, the armor would be thin enough that its composition is pretty much irrelevant against the stuff that it'll encounter in War Thunder.
So.. now where is the chieftain Marksman?
will you also be adding the M61A5 version of the Type 61 and the RX-75 version of the guntank? :]
