Today we are pleased to present the Japanese answer to American Thunderbolts and Super Fortresses!
Meet the Ki-87 - The high altitude interceptor!
Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, it became clear that Japan would require machines that were capable of stopping US bombing raids. The army commissioned therefore, to create and produce a high-altitude fighter capable of intercepting enemy bombers before they hit Japanese controlled islands. This objective sought, was achieved in part, by creating a twin-engined Mitsubishi Ki-83 and Kawasaki Ki-102, both of which are well-known to War Thunder players. In competition with the above-mentioned projects, an aircraft created by Kunihiro Aoki from the Nakajima Aircraft Company was a single-engine fighter equipped with a super-turbocharger and a pressurized cabin.

It took over two years to create the prototype of the Ki-87. Engineers encountered a number of problems, one of the biggest of which was the use of the super-turbocharger. The first flight of the machine took place in April of 1945. Ultimately, the aircraft had to reach nearly 700 km/h, whilst being equipped with 4 cannons: 2x20mm and 2x30mm, so that a pilot would be able to intercept enemy aircraft operating at high altitude, specifically the American B-29 Superfortress. However, before the machine had reached its full efficiency in battle, the war between Japan and the United States of America was over.

One of the most characteristic elements of this aircraft is a large super-turbocharger mounted on the right side of the fuselage. Our graphic designers have tried to reproduce as accurately as possible, the module on which Japanese engineers spent so much of their valuable time to implement into the vehicle. Another distinguishing element is the aircraft's landing gear, prior to climbing beyond take off, it is rotated by 90 degrees, and only then retracts. Of course this element has also been recreated by us faithfully in the game.

In contrast to the A6M Zero, Ki fighters never belonged to the most agile, so any player who sits in a Ki-87 cockpit should focus primarily on attacks that use the height/altitude advantage. With 20 and 30 mm cannons, even a short, accurate burst is able to rip or tear an enemy fighter or bomber apart.
Ki-87, one of the latest aircraft created in Japan during the Second World War, it will be a great addition to the Premium branch of the Japanese Tech Tree. Soon it will take pride of place in the line-up of many players who like to fly under the flag of the Rising Sun!

Works as a premium actually I'm glad they made that choice, Japan seem to be lacking an exceptional higher tier premium
The Ki-87 is a very unique aircraft, it indeed will be a very efficient premium for research and Silver Lion earnings!
Smin1080p, Something is unique or it is not - it cannot be "very" unique!! lol In this case 1 aircraft was made, apparently it only did 5 flights and never retracted it's undercarriage......yay...yet another gap filler ...excuse me while I go be underwhelmed.........shame Gaijin dont' put as much effort into designing good historical game modes so they don't have to create mythical aircraft (with the 2nd one to appear in WT would be - as would the 1st one if someone retracts the gear!)
Yeah, but so is the USA. :/
SionG_27, Actually, the spit, 190, and p 47 are all good planes.
Nice. The Su-6, of which one existed and was never flown, with it's "proposed armament" and "proposed engine" is on the STANDARD IN-GAME TREE, but this is premium for Japan? Nonsensical. Money-grubbing has never been this obvious. You should be ashamed of yourselves. The community does not want premiums, and yet the planes that should be premium aren't. Your Su-6 aircraft only got the exception because surprise - it's a Russian plane. There is no other explanation. Ridiculous.
You seem to be missing several very key factors here. Firstly, take a look at the tier III and IV USSR premium and gift aircraft. There are in excess of over 10+ aircraft present here ranging from attacker, bomber, fighter and multirole aircraft. There is already a solid range of USSR premium aircraft available, so the Su-6 makes more logical sense to offer a reseachable alternative to the succession of IL-2 and Pe-3 models that fill the Soviet attack branch. By contrast, there are 4 Japanese Rank IV premiums total. However in the reseachable section of the Japanese tree, you have 3 Ki-84 models, 3 N1K(1 and 2), 2 J2M models, the Ki-83 and the J7W all as Fighter options for the Japanese. As there is already a vast and ever expanding choice for Japanese Rank IV fighters, it makes more logical sense to place the Experimental Ki-87 as a premium to provide a strong indigenous design for Rank IV. You have 5 Soviet Attackers in Rank III and 10 Fighters of different variants in Rank IV of the Japanese tree. So its actually quite clear and logical as to why a alternative to the IL-2/Pe-3 series is being introduced into the reseachable section and why the experimental Ki-87 is simply not needed in Japanese tree already fairly balanced with a range of fighters that are all reseachable.
All answers (5)Smin1080p, Yeah but what about Japan's tier 3 to 5 gap what are you guys gonna do about that?
Actually the community does want premiums. Your community doesnt want to support the game, mine does. Enjoy leeching off others support to play a game you wont pay for.
Thank you Gaijin! Thank you so much! Dream come true!!!!
:)
Sexy looking plane :) GJ Gaijin...as always!
Thank you EnkoACE o7
I was happy until I saw "Premium addition" part..... Non-premium when?
The Ki-87 was an experimental fighter, its most logically placed as a Rank IV premium as there are already 3 Ki-84 models, 3 N1K(1 and 2), 2 J2M models, the Ki-83 and the J7W all as Fighter options for the Japanese. Japan lacks Rank IV premiums and the Ki-87 is a very obvious and logical choice.
Smin1080p, So after all you tell with this that the Ki-94 will also be a premium ?
So you wanted a high-performance prototype in the main tech tree ? Right...
Taiidan_Triikor, Su-6 *cough* experimental *cough*
