The attack on Pearl Harbor was a famous battle which occurred during World War Two, during which the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise military strike against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor. Subsequently, the attack led to the United States of America formally entering the war.

Japanese command had intended the attack to serve as a preemptive move in order to keep the U.S. Pacific fleet from interfering with military action that was planned against their enemies. At 7:48 am Hawaiian Time, Japanese fighter planes, bombers and torpedo planes launched from 6 aircraft carriers. Resultingly, all 8 of the U.S. Navy battleships located at Pearl Harbor were damaged, with 4 sinking. Japanese forces were also able to damage 3 cruisers, three destroyers, an anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer. Over the course of the events that took place, Over 2,400 Americans were killed, with another 1,178 wounded. The Japanese lost 29 aircraft, as well as 5 midget submarines, and 64 servicemen were killed.

The attack of Pearl Harbor came as a profound shock to the United States, resulting in their entry into both the Pacific and European theatres of the war. Subsequent operations by the U.S. prompted Germany and Italy to declare war on the 11th of December, which was reciprocated by the U.S. the same day.

Today, we pay solemn tribute to America's sons and daughters who made the ultimate sacrifice at Oahu. As we do, let us also reaffirm that their legacy will always burn bright -- whether in the memory of those who knew them, the spirit of service that guides our men and women in uniform today, or the heart of the country they kept strong and free. The Congress, by Public Law 103-308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as "National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day." - Presidential Proclamation -- National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2012
