The French M4A1 added a unique turret design to the classic Sherman tank in the form of the oscillating turret, which was designed by the French and also used in the French AMX-13.
Oscillating turrets consist of an upper and lower part and enabled the cannon to elevate by tilting the entire top of the turret, whereas the lower part connected to the turret ring and enabled horizontal movement. This design provided multiple advantages, including high gun placement, smaller turret size, and a simpler, more reliable autoloader mechanism.
French engineers introduced several innovations to the Sherman tank design, including the oscillating turret, which was very different from all previous turret designs ever mounted on a Sherman chassis. However, the French only ever modified a handful of Sherman tanks to the M4A1 FL10 standard and never used it within the ranks of their own army. Instead, the M4A1 FL10 was purely intended as an export vehicle for Egypt. The oscillating design enabled smaller turrets and reduced the weight and size of the tank—which also made it a smaller target. However, it also made for cramped crew quarters.
Fortunately, the turret crew didn’t need to load the 75mm cannon on the M4A1 FL10. Similar to the AMX-13, an automated mechanism automatically reloaded the cannon. The autoloader consisted of two drum magazines, each of which held 6 rounds.
With twin “six shooter” drums, a gunner could fire a total of twelve shots in quick succession without reloading. Unfortunately, to reload the autoloader, the tank would have to withdraw from the battlefield, and the crew would have to exit the tank and reload the mechanism manually from the outside of the tank.
In War Thunder this process is simply simulated through a lengthy reload time before the gun is ready to fire again.
The M4A1 FL10 is being readied to join the ranks of the upcoming French ground forces tree as a premium vehicle for the intermediate ranks.
- M4A1 FL10 tank (Rank 3 France);
- Premium account for 7 days;
- 1000 Golden Eagles;
- Pre-order bonus - "MAS 38 SMG" 3d decoration;
- Pre-order bonus - "Desert Wolf" title;
- French tanks closed beta access.
War Thunder’s update 1.75 is on its way - stay tuned for more information!
See you on the battlefield!

"Frenchman"!
two things: "and a simpler, more reliable autoloader mechanism" if even M4 had autoloader. "With twin “six shooter” drums, a gunner could fire a total of twelve shots in quick succession without reloading" it wasn't anything special, its not exactly that much faster than good trained crew one source state "A rate of fire of one round every 5 seconds can be achieved until the two magazines are empty." with is 1s faster than normal 76mm M4 at cost of long reload. other state 6s between rounds
Yes 5 secs isn't that impresive at first, But this is War Thunder. If the commander(Loader) is dead, it's still gonna be 5 secs to reload a new shell (But a even longer mag reload), but in any other tank, if the loader is dead, well it's not so quick anymore.
Any word on what ammo this beast will use?
It states nowhere what ammo it fires, oh well of to World of tanks to find out!
So the AMX 13 had two 6 shell magazins which were independent from each other. Will you be able after you emptied one magazin to use the second one right away, while the first one reloads?
since you normally would have to retreat from battle and couldn´t reload while shooting the rest of the magazine, I highly doubt it
In the devblog of the AMX 13 ss11 if I remember right they said yes. IRL you could that too, you needed to reload outside after the 2 magzines
That's a pretty bizarre turret right there. so weird seeing the turret move up & down rather than the mantlet.
That quadruple chin never passed on a croissant, that's for sure. )
as far as i'm aware that sherman hull is just exactly the same hull as M4A1 we already have? Would it not be better if you could at least adding something like military equipments like bags, french helmets, french backpacks, boxes and all that on the engine deck or on the sides of the tank just to make it look differently to the existed sherman tank ? and also it would makes it seem more worthly for such a price too...
So, the tanks with FL-10 turret will fire 6 shots and reload (wrong) or (correct) will fire 12 shots and reload? It will be choice there to load 1 drum with AP and second with HE and switch between them without delay?
How much ammo does it carry in total in game? It sounds like 12 should be the right amount carried, but then the bit about lengthy reload time in WT seems to suggest it has more ammo than just the two six round drums.. Very short reload between shells, short between drums and extra lengthy to load more drums after two have been used up? Or it carries 12 ammo total and the time to reload shells at a capture point is lengthy?
The longer high velocity barrel should be far superior to current shermans, equal to the Panther gun, this unit also used "special ammunitions" to make it even more lethal, will it be implemented in game also?
It would be pretty cool if you went into the Great War era after you get to the 80s or something with modern vehicles
