The Allies needed a "breakthrough tank" for the Normandy campaign. In response, the M4A3E2,(Jumbo) was converted from the M4A3 at the Fisher Tank Arsenal. 254 were rapidly produced between June 1944 and July 1944. It had a 75mm M3 Gun mounted and was powered by a Ford GAA V8 18.0 litre engine. It had thick frontal armour, with appliqué armour on the frontal glacis of 89 mm (3.5 in), which gave a total of 178 mm (7 in)(doubling the original thickness).
