November 11th holds a special place in the hearts of those in Britain and the Commonwealth nations. At 1100 on this day in 1918, hostilities formally ceased to end the Great War – now known as the First World War. In November 1919, King George V announced to Britain that this day would forever be put aside as an opportunity to remember the ultimate sacrifice paid by so many men and women in the greatest conflict the nation had ever endured. The symbol selected to represent this day of remembrance was the poppy; the ubiquitous red flower that somehow managed to bloom across so many battlefields along the western front despite the carnage and mayhem which surrounded all.
