Against the backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty, in the 1950s, the Soviet military decided that their motorised and mechanised infantry needed a specialised vehicle. At the end of the decade the goals were set: the new vehicle had to be capable of carrying troops, providing fire support for tanks and also eliminating enemy armour on its own.
