At Reims in France on the 7th of May 1945 the remnants of the OKW - the German High Command authorised the signing of an unconditional surrender to all units on all fronts: the war in Europe had come to it’s final end. The following day, the 8th of  May, would be declared as VE “Victory in Europe” Day.  The surrender would only take effect at midnight on the 8/9 of May 1945 after the documents had been formally accepted with the signatures of Marshal Zhukov, General Carl Spaatz, Air Chief Marshal A.W.Tedder and head of the OKW, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel. while Europe was engaging in celebration there was still trepidation for many, for these celebrations would be tempered with the knowledge that the war in the Pacific was still to be won.

Berlin: Not a single flag flew, no standards fluttered in the breeze, just the heavy scent of despair, the people of Germany had rolled the dice and lost. they came from cellars, bunkers and woodlands, the German people emerged into a new world and into the hands of the occupiers.

Moscow: Thousands took part in a Victory Day Parade on the 9th of May, In a grand display of colour, pageantry and national exuberance the streets of Moscow were filled with units of the Soviet Military and civilians in their thousands celebrated and took stock of the great victory they had won. The scale of the celebrations in red square had no equal, they were of a grandeur not seen in the west, there would be a official even bigger Victory parade on June 24th 1945, this event organised at length to show the world the new-found strength of the Soviet Union. The cost to the Soviet Union had been great, and no other front saw the numbers of casualties seen on the eastern front. It was however the price that had to be paid for the freedom of europe from it’s Nazi occupiers.

London:  Great crowds, many dressed in the Union Jack or in red, white and blue, gathered at the gates of Buckingham Palace in London as the King of England, the Queen and two Princesses came out onto the balcony and celebrated.

Earlier in the day many thousands of people listened intently as the King's speech was relayed by loudspeaker to those who had gathered in both Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square.

Paris: The City Erupted with Jubilant crowds, the city which had been liberated some months before now throbbed with energy and crowds as they marched to the Arc de Triomphe where a ceremony was held and wreaths were laid. the Crowds continued to march and celebrate amongst the streets of Paris and in almost every village of France.

New York: The streets of New York flooded with people, crowds packed the streets shoulder to shoulder, church bells chimed, every man woman and child gave thanks, some got drunk, many prayed, and all gave thanks this day had come, the celebrations were long and cheerful, but tinged with sorrow for all those lost, and yet to be sacrificed.

The war you see was not yet done, the war continued. In the Pacific theatre the war raged on with a determination not seen in europe, it was bloodshed not on an industrial scale as it had been in the fields of France or on the Steppes of Russia, this was a primeval battle fought tooth and nail, with bitter desperate fighting, of animal determination to utterly irrevocably annihilate the enemy, who ever they may be.

We would like to share the Victory Day celebrations with you and hope you all have a great weekend.

Regards and Best Wishes, The War Thunder Team
